Just a few thoughts

Maybe it's me, but attendance has been down in the area lately for all games. I know it's summer, vacations, hot weather or that other things have to be done at this time.

I know Owls games used to be close to capacity for the most of the first five years or so. I know the Owls have rubbed some people wrong in the past. I know legion baseball has shifted in a new direction over the past couple of seasons, the schedule is not as long and by the time you get use to it, the season is over.

So the question becomes, is it the time people have to spend, money people have to spend, the product on the field or has the burning past caught up with one, the other or both?

Honestly, I would probably say that the answer is all of the above. I could write a whole lot more about this, but I thought I would ad my two cents.

I miss the days of Mahoney and Mallioux for the Owls with the grandstand filled with people sitting in lawn chairs down the left field line or on blankets in the grass. I miss Will Thompson's clutch hitting in Legion baseball games with a decent crowd.

Now back onto sports in general.

It's sort of funny, Post 423 has now won four games in a row after starting out the season 0-5. They are now back in the hunt of playoff contention. Their win streak came right after the graduation break.

The Forest City Owls have only won three of their last ten games and sit an even 9-9. They will host games on July 1st, 4th, 5th of the upcoming week.

It's hard to believe, but Coastal Carolina made it to the College World Series Finals. They had to beat TCU twice, who likely had the best pitching on that side of the bracket coming into the CWS. I guess it's about time for Coastal to make it this far. The state of South Carolina has 12 CWS appearances, South Carolina has won the title twice and the Citadel even has an appearance. This College World Series will likely be over with by the time this column prints, but Arizona and Coastal Carolina will figure out the National Title. I really think the Chanticleers win. Arizona has good pitching, but they haven't seen the hitting Coastal brings. LSU, TCU, N.C. State couldn't survive it. Coastal already beat the defending National Champions, Virginia earlier in the season. Coastal has three solid pitchers and the whole club can hit. TCU was the best remaining club in the tourney after Florida was knocked out, but we will see if I am right about that shortly.

Reminder: Little League Tournaments have started. If your team is going to state, let me know so that I can recognize them. Also, for those who have something of topic in county sports wise, let me know.

I do need a Legion Baseball update from someone within since I can't make it to all the games. When High Schools get back into playing again, I would love to hear from more coaches, players, etc. I wouldn't mind the Rutherford Weekly being more involved, but I can't do it without some help. So, thanks in advance!
