The reflective water scene with the mountains in the back is just one of the many awe inspiring pictures of the man made Lake Lure. Many people are unaware that Lake Lure if a man made marvel. It presently houses a little over 1,000 residents and has become, together with Chimney Rock,  a big attraction for people from all over the nation. Lake Lure was incorporated in 1927 and acquired the lake in 1965. It has been used as a location for films, the most famous of which is “Dirty Dancing”. The first film was the 1958 movie “Thunder Road” starring Robert Mitchum. Other films made there weree “My Fellow Americans” , “A Breed Apart”, “The Last Of The Mohicans” (Chimney Rock), and “Firestarter”. Both  Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, now owned by the state of North Carolina, are the pride of Rlutherford County.
