Can't get to the library? Then let the library come to you!

The Rutherford County Library is placing little libraries around Rutherford County in the communities of Golden Valley, Gilkey, White House, Rutherfordton, Caroleen and Cliffside. The libraries, which look like oversized birdhouses, were built by the Rutherford County Woodworkers Association and painted by artists from the Rutherford County Visual Artists Guild.

"The purpose of little libraries is to reach areas that don't have easy access to libraries," said Maria Davis, marketing and outreach coordinator for Rutherford County Library.

Some libraries, like those in Cliffside and Caroleen, will be placed at sites owned by the county. Others are located on private property. Little libraries will be installed this summer.

A variety of books - all of which were donated, Davis said - will go into the boxes. Adult and children's books will be available for people to read.

"They can then return them, read them and pass them on or replace it with one of their own books," Davis added. "We want people to utilize them and read."

Locations for the little libraries will be:

- Golden Valley Community Clubhouse

- White House Community Clubhouse

- Gilkey Community Center

- American Legion Post No. 74 in Rutherfordton

- Frank West Park in Caroleen

- Honeysuckle Park in Cliffside
