Last week was another solid effort for Rutherford county high school basketball teams. They fared well at 10-6 in contest before non-conference hit this week.

East Rutherford continues its sizzling offensive production with two more of those last week. After leading 45-22 at the half, they downed A.C. Reynolds in a 78-45 non-conference win. In the latter half of the week, East dispatched of Hunter Huss, 83-63.

Raheem Hampton has been on fire lately with 10 treys in the combine games last week. Hampton dropped 37 points on Huss in the road victory. Devonte Boykins also averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Cavs captured both road wins. After facing R-S Central this past Tuesday, they will take on Patton at home this Friday (16th) and then Veritas Christian Academy on Tuesday the (20th).

R-S Central (3-4) split last week as they scored a huge 66-60 win over McDowell at home and lost by 10 points in a great effort against a very good Asheville club. Three late steals and seven free throws put away McDowell, but Central must do a better job at the line the other three quarters of a game. Central will have a three game stretch that ends with a visit from conference preseason favorite, Freedom on the 20th.

Chase (3-1) lost their first game of the season to Mitchell, but ended the week by beating them in the rematch. The Trojans, who lost the first game by 16 to Mitchell held onto five point win against Mitchell after leading by 11 to begin the final frame. Chase traveled to Patton on Tuesday and will play host to R-S Central (16th) on Friday.

Thomas Jefferson (2-2) fell at the buzzer on a Draughn putback, 69-68 in the school’s home opener at Cool Springs Gym.

Although, Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez posted 35 more points (still averaging 31.8 per game), it was Efrim Borders who stepped up with a season high 18 points and nine assists and four steals as Waldroup-Rodriguez faced foul trouble. They destroyed Crossnore Academy earlier in the week to split the difference. They had Mitchell this Tuesday and Avery on the road to begin conference play, but host Madison on the (20th).

East Rutherford’s girls nabbed two wins last week, while R-S Central’s girls won twice in seven days.

East Rutherford (5-0) easily took two wins after gaining a 17-1 advantage in the first quarter against A.C. Reynolds to win by double digits and then had little problem with Huss later in the week.

R-S Central’s girls blasted Asheville, 56-32 and avenged an earlier loss to McDowell on a last second defensive stand last week. The Lady Hilltoppers (6-1), who beat McDowell, 41-40, have been taking care of business by blocking out and rebounding on defense, thus limiting their opponents to one shot.

Tia Bristol played the underdog role in a sense with 10 points and 10 rebounds in her first double-double this season to help knock off McDowell.

Chase (0-4) and Thomas Jefferson (1-3) both struggled as Chase was defeated twice and TJCA gladly split in two games.

The Lady Trojans were paced by Kendra Holcombe 14.5 point per game average in two contests last week.

Bruna Marahno led the way for Thomas Jefferson with 12 and Victoria Bennett added 11 in the 52-40 loss to Draughn. Thomas Jefferson nabbed their first win of the season last week against Crossnore Academy, 51-9.

And for thought, I have a couple of things to say in regards to the NFL.

My dark horse pick to win the Super Bowl just a month ago were the Chicago Bears. However, Jay Cutler was injured three weeks ago and now Matt Forte joins the list. They had won five in a row before Cutler’s injury, but have lost three straight since then. No doubt, Green Bay is in the driver’s seat.

And although Carolina has a 4-9 record, it’s been a more exciting Panther team to watch this rebuilding year.
