Held in Rutherfordton were the R-S Central duals this past Saturday and along with that came mixed results among county wrestling teams.

St. Stephens won the overall tourney (5-0 on Saturday), Crest was second (4-1), followed by R-S Central 3-2), South Point (2-3), Chase (1-4) and East Rutherford (0-5).

R-S Central’s Colin Cope led the Hilltopper grapplers in going 5-0 in his weight division, while Kaleb Hines also posted an undefeated 5-0 mark on Saturday. D.J. Bradley did well with a 4-1 record on the afternoon.

“Just two kids returned with winning records from a year ago, so we are young, but we’re picking up the pace,” R-S Central coach Rich Cox said.

For Chase, it was Josh Stephens and Jesus Sanchez that went 5-0 to pace the Trojans. Stephan Phillips, Lance Johnson and Dillon Hemphill collected 4-1 records in the event.

More importantly, Stephens kept his overall undefeated record intact on the season at 28-0 and stays at #2 in the state among 2A in his weight class.

Chase tied both Central and South Point in points, but lost by default to them both as the Trojans were pinned more times in both matches.

“Despite our youth, we are heading in the right direction,” Chase coach Adam Dedmon said. ”The cards just didn’t fall our way today.”

East Rutherford’s Andy Van Dyke showed the way for the Cavalier going 4-1 on the day and teammate Nathan Daisley went 3-1 in his matches. The Cavaliers are undermanned with just 13 on the roster, so they have to take advantage of each match in order to win meets. Conference meets begin this week.

NFL Wildcard Playoffs

Cincy was ousted by Houston as the Texans were able to get 140 rushing and a touchdown out of Arian Foster. Houston’s defense also did a great job in just allowing Cincy 198 yards total offense in the game.

New England will host Houston this Sunday. The last time they played, New England won 42-14.

I don’t see that changing much as New England should win, 41-17.

As for the other AFC Wildcard game, Baltimore got an emotional Ray Lewis back and ousted the Indianapolis Colts, 24-9. Lewis (led the team with nine tackles in the game), who played his final home game in the NFL didn’t leave without a jog around the inside of the stadium. It was pretty cool and he deserved to have that moment. No doubt, when you think of the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Lewis is the name that comes to mind.

Still, they have to face Denver at Denver on Saturday. Broncos won earlier in the season at Baltimore. I am taking Denver 31-17.

Over in the NFC, Green Bay took a 24-3 lead in the third quarter and cruised to a 24-10 win at home over Minnesota. It was the first time all year, that they had held Adrian Peterson to under 100 yards rushing in three games.

Green Bay will travel to San Francisco on Saturday to take on the 49ers. This might be the game of the week and question whether I trust San Francisco’s defense and quarterback situation or Green Bay’s experience. I will go on a limb and take Green Bay 28-23.

In the night cap at Washington, Seattle took control after Washington’s second possession. Despite not getting the lead until the second half, Robert Griffin III was hampered by a knee injury all night and just didn’t look the same after the first two drives went for touchdowns.

Marshawn Lynch, who fumbled inside the Washington 5-yard line earlier in the evening, redeemed himself by scoring the winning touchdown in a 24-14 Seattle victory.

This Sunday, it will be Seattle traveling to the east coast again, but  to play at Atlanta. Atlanta has played well at home and Seattle just plays well in domes. Atlanta’s offense maybe the most potent in the NFC, but I am going to roll with the Seahawks train again this week as they upset the Falcons, 28-27.
