Well, here it is…my All-Rutherford County Football team selections for this season. While there were 160 varsity players or so this season, 40 make the cut (10 each team) as I had last year.

There are a few more kids that probably deserve to be on this list, but thank you all for a great football season.

Thomas Jefferson: Tyler Mitchell (WR/DB Made possibly the play of the year against Andrews on 58-yard reception), Efrim Borders WR/DB (Dangerous player, every team made sure they knew exactly where he was on field), Coty Flynn FB/LB (Power runner that can pop you as well at linebacker), Trey McGhee LB/DL (Dynamic player and the fastest kid to the football this season and fun to watch), Brooks Corders OL/DL (Very dependable on line play), Seth McGraw LB/DL (Fourth leading tackler on team this season), Chris Mintz OL/DL (Excellent line play this season), Mason Martin QB/DB (accounted for 20 touchdowns and over 2048 yards), Michael Minder OL/DL (Not easy to block) and Mason Fenner WR/P/DB (Became the kicker, had three touchdown receptions and played some defense.

R-S Central: Jay’len Hollis QB/DB (Athletic quarterback had a solid second half of the season), Rashaun Whitesides HB/S (tough to defend on the sweep), Matt Atchley RB (Read about him a little later), Trey Clark LB (Maybe the hardest hitter among defensive players in the county), Nate Murray DB/WR (Best DB in county this season), Jared Foster Smith (fast and is a playmaker on defense), Desmond Whitesides HB/DB (Proved dangerous with the football), Robbie Rothrock OL/DL (Most solid Hilltopper lineman this season), Michael Murphy OL/DL (No doubt, respectable lineman) and Ivan Gutierrez OL/DL (Most underrated lineman this season).

East Rutherford: Griffin Stamey WR/DB (Proven as one of the best receivers in the county), Calvin Camp DB (made a ton of defensive plays), Austin Hollifield QB (the best throwing QB this season), Kaleb McEntrye (Had a highlight reel of playmaking himself on defense), Will Hollifield TE (Best tight end in the county this season), Tyree Lindsay CB/S (Smart, speedy, gifted defensive player) Kameron Garrison RB (the most dangerous Cav in the open field), Jordan Strickland OL/DL (You can only hope to contain him; the best pass rusher this season), Tray Greene FB/DL/LB (Hard to block and tougher to tackle) and Harrison Wilkerson K (Best kicker again this season).

Chase: Jordan O’Rourke S/ATH (Put him anywhere on the field and he will do something special), Dace Rollins DB (defensively stepped up all year long), Malik Young CB/KR (Athletic and dangerous), Bryston Hill LB (Had a great second half of the year on D), Josh Wright FB/LB (Disappointing year, but still a solid player), De’Andre Kelly RB/CB (One to watch next year), Stephon Phillips DL/LB (Has a nose for the football), Chandler Casner C/DL (Best center of any this season), Derek Hamrick OL (Did exactly what was needed of him) and Brandon Hill (The senior captain led by example in line play).

Player of the year: Matt Atchley, R-S Central. Nobody carried a team in the county like this kid did in 2013. When they needed a big play, he usually had the answer. Maybe the biggest play of the year when he returned the kickoff before end of first half against East Rutherford for a touchdown. Whether at running back, return man, defensive back or punting, Atchley did everything he could in his power for the Hilltoppers in 2013. 2. Efrim Borders 3. Jordan O’Rourke 4. Jordan Strickland 5. Trey McGhee/Austin Hollifield.

Coach of the year: Mike Cheek. Last year’s selection without a doubt was Jerry Cash and a strong case could be made this season. However, Cheek took R-S Central to the playoffs for the first time in four years after winning just six games in the previous three seasons combined. Impressively, they finished fourth in conference play and won five games overall. Last year, they won just once and finished last in conference. This may not be the most talented Central team that has seen the field, but Cheek found a way for this group to play the hardest and toughest he has ever seen in his decade at “The Palace.”

For those who keep asking about Carolina-New England? Yes, I believe Luke Kueckly should have received a holding penalty on Gronkowski, but that’s what Tom Brady was hoping would happen as planned. There isn’t anybody in the NFL who can cover Gronkowski when healthy.

Down in Chesnee (11-1), they are in Class AA Division II football semifinals after beating Ninety-Six 46-28. Chesnee will host Batesburg-Leesville (10-2) on Friday.
