They remain the only Rutherford County team alive now after taking down Starmount 10-1, on Tuesday night. The Cavs go for the western regional championship starting today at home against East Lincoln (23-6). East Lincoln would host on Friday and the Cavs would go back home for Saturday’s contest, if game three in the series was necessary.
As for Chase baseball (16-8), they ended the season with a heartbreaking 4-1 loss against Starmount, last Friday. However, they did knock out No. 1 seed, Wilkes Central in the second round exiting in the third.
The inconsistencies of R-S Central baseball (8-17) ended their season on Wednesday. After beating Crest in the first round, they accumulated 10 errors in a round two, 13-1 loss to Enka last Wednesday.
For the second year in a row, East Rutherford’s softball team is proving themselves on the road. The Lady Cavs whipped North Henderson 10-6 and then dispatch of Starmount 9-3 in true road warrior fashion.
However, it all ended at Owen with a 5-1 loss in the third round of the playoffs, Tuesday. For the second year in a row, East (13-10) has lost in the third round, but has taken four of six road games in the playoffs over the past two seasons.
Meanwhile, Chase softball again fell victim to a first round foe in back-to-back years. Last year, it was Cuthbertson, but this time it was Draughn. The Wildcats pulled off a 5-2 upset in a reversal of fortunes.
Chase (15-4) outhit Draughn 6-1 in the first five innings, but could only come up with one run. In the final two frames, Draughn punched up six base hits (for four runs) to two hits for Chase.
R-S Central (6-14) seems to go out competitively in the postseason and barely lost a 2-1 decision at Fred T. Foard last Wednesday. Over the last four years, the Lady Hilltoppers have concluded their season by a one-run loss in the softball playoffs.
At the Track & Field 2A state meet last weekend in Greensboro, East Rutherford senior, Cheyenne Miller set a new state record in the Women’s High Jump of 5 feet-7 inches. Miller was also second in the Women’s Triple Jump with Chase senior, Claudette Miller coming up ninth in the same event.
The Lady Cavs’ Kaziah Miller, Rosaland Lattimore, Shay Dewberry, and Cheyenne Miller finished fourth in the 4X200-meter team relay event.
Thomas Jefferson’s Levy Floyd grabbed the best Thomas Jefferson result in the 1A state Track meet in Greensboro, finishing seventh in the 1600-meter dash.
Jamia Logan gained an eighth in the 1A Women’s 100-meter dash and Rachel Tevis was eighth in the 400-mmeter dash for TJCA.
Rutherford County Post 423 Legion baseball springs into action this week. They will play at Taylorsville on Friday and at Burke on Saturday before coming home to face Asheville at McNair Field on Sunday night at 7 p.m. They will end the four game stretch with a visit from Shelby on Monday night at McNair.
And the weekend couldn’t end any better with the traditional Coca-Cola 600 and Indy 500, which roll off Sunday.
