The Southeast Champs - those Rutherford County boys - proudly wearing their medals!

In the 34th Annual The Junior League World Series, the Rutherford County Little League team became the Southeast North Carolina Champions. Manager Curtis Snethen said: “This team is one of the best in its age group that I have ever fielded. They did a phenomenal job! I can’t say enough good things about them.”

After defeating all teams in the Southeast which included Cherryville, SW Forsyth (twice), Wilmington, Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Tennessee and Florida and a perfect 8-0 record the team went to Taylor, Michigan to represent the Southeast as North Carolina Champions for the Junior League World Series. To understand how the Junior World Series works you must realize that of over 3500 teams, the top 10 teams in the world go to the Junior league World Series. Five teams were from the United States and the other five were International teams. Our Rutherford County Southeast Champs ended up with a 2-2 record losing to Delaware and California. The eventual United States team that played for the championship, the Southwest Champs, Texas was defeated by our Rutherford boys, 17-3 on Thursday, August 14th. However, their record was 3-1 as opposed to our Southeast Champs who had a record of 2-2. The championship game, which aired on ESPN on Saturday, August 16th, pitted the International Champion, Chinese Taipei against Texas. Chinese Taipei won the game 9-1 to become the Junior League World Series Champions! The irony of it all is that the only team to defeat Texas in the games prior to the championship game was our own Rutherford County Southeast Champs.

When it comes to bragging rights, our Rutherford County Southeast Squad is definitely number one! Team Totals in overall batting average: they were #2 with a team average of .333; they were #1 with 451 in slugging percentage, #2 in on base percentage with 474; on stolen bases they were #3. The statistics show just how well rounded this 2014 Junior League team from Rutherford County was.

For Manager Curtis Snethen, Coach Mike Barrella, Coach Keith Snethen and team members, Joey Daigle, Cameron Snethen, Levi Parks, Jacob Knox, Wesley Smith, Jace Crowe, Sam McArthur, Joseph Conner, Keaton Snethen, Marty Barrella, Landon Fagan, Jake Laughter, Adam McDowell, Josh Searcy and Clint Condrey, we are proud of your tremendous efforts and championship skills. You all represented Rutherford County very well, not only to the United States, but to the world! Always remember you were one of 10 teams - just five from the United States -  that made it to the Junior League World Series in 2014! Great memories for a great team! You each do us proud!
