Oscar “Junior” Dodson, age 88

Oscar “Junior” Dodson, age 88, of Forest City, NC, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013.

Born June 8, 1925 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Oscar T. Dodson and Mattie Belle Rhodes Dodson.  He served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. Junior worked in textiles for over twenty-five years before retiring and then he and his late wife, Virginia, worked as house parents for the Oxford Orphanage in Oxford, NC and the Mills Home in Thomasville, NC. He was a graduate of Gardner-Webb Seminary and a past member of Alexander Baptist Church.  He loved building things, gardening, raising farm animals and working hard.  He especially cared for all of his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Hazel Lawson Dodson and two sons, Ronald Dodson and Barry Dodson.

Survivors include his wife, Genell Causby Newton Dodson; sister, Joyce Causby and husband, Gus of Shelby; three step-children, Roger Newton and wife, Rhonda of Greenville, SC, Chris Newton and Christine Pennington and husband, Marvin all of Shelby; five grandchildren, Melissa Dodson Carlisle and husband, Jon of Forest City, Traci Dodson Duke and husband, Ted of Westfield, NC, Cheryl Dodson Williams and husband, Brad of Reidsville, NC, Jeff Dodson and wife, Beverly of Winston-Salem and Angie Dodson Anders and husband, Mike of Mt. Airy, NC.   He is also survived by two-daughter in-laws, Janine Henson Dodson of Forest City and Janet Jenkins Dodson of Winston-Salem; a special brother in-law, Robert Lawson of Forest City; eleven grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Junior’s Grandchildren officiating.  Interment followed in Eternal Hills Cemetery with military honors being accorded by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
