The leaves are changing color and are beginning to fall. In my area, this is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Thousands will come to see the autumn colors that blanket the mountains of East Tennessee. The protective canopy that had surrounded us hunters just a few weeks ago will now surrender its leaves and expose us as an unwanted intruder. The forest will change, led by the leaves on each tree. This is a change orchestrated by God. Over the years, I have made the claim that I have never met an atheist hunter. Anyone who is outside as much as a hunter understands that even though we may not understand how He did it, when He did it, or why He did it; we believe Somebody bigger than you and me created this earth that we live on. And it doesn’t take much research to conclude that God planned for us to know about Him through creation. Everything that He created has meaning. It gives us a glimpse of the nature and qualities of God. The trees are a perfect example.

Each fall, most trees shed their leaves. If we look at a tree after the leaves have fallen, it looks dead. There it stands, without giving any hint as to the life that is just under its skin. There is no color, or movement, or promise by its appearance. But if we look within, we can see there is life. It may be dormant but in another season it will come alive again. This is the picture of the soul. One day this body will give up life as we know it. By all outward appearances it will look as if it is the end; no color, no movement, no promise. But just below our flesh is the soul – it is life. Our exterior may look dormant but in another season it will come alive again. It will take on a new body, one that will never decay or be destroyed. It will be everlasting.

It is truly amazing to see all that God did in order to show us about Himself. He must really care for us and want us to be with Him. How tragic if we never get the message.
