I walked up the hill with my tree stand in one hand and my back pack in the other. It was only a short trek so I decided to carry the backpack instead of wearing it on my back. As I came to the crest of the hill, so did two doe from the other side. We both caught each other’s movement at the same time and were only about 50 yards between us. We both stopped and stood motionless and I could tell they were unsure about what I was. I think the tree stand and the backpack gave them an unfamiliar silhouette. I don’t know why I froze. It wasn’t like I had anything to shoot at them. It was just habit but since I had already decided to stay still, I was going to see what would happen. The tree stand was in my left hand and they were standing at my left as well. After a few minutes the weight of the stand was getting heavy. Somehow I was able to lower it just enough so that the bottom of it was setting on the ground. I moved my hand away and let it lean against my leg. I inched my arm and hand back to my side. The deer never left. Their curiosity began to get the best of them. They came closer, stomped, and walked around trying to get a better look at what I was. After a couple of minutes turned into ten, I decided I was going to see how much movement I could get away with before they decided to bolt away.

My hand was now lying on my stomach so I began to move my index finger back and forth. They looked, moved closer, and decided to graze. One finger turned into two and two eventually turned into my whole hand waving back and forth. Since the wind was blowing slightly, they never gave it much thought even though they were still staring at me. Since the hand waving didn’t work, I began to swing my arm back and forth from my elbow, never moving my shoulder. They never moved. It was getting funny now. I thought, for entertainment value, I’d raise my knee up between waves; one wave, one knee kick, one wave, one knee kick, and so on. If someone would have seen me, they would have thought I was drunk. It wasn’t until I began to integrate the other arm that they finally left. And I belted out a big laugh.

Sometimes Christians are hard to figure out as well. We do some things that are strange and even funny to a watching world, but we are as normal and as imperfect as anyone else. The difference is we have found Someone who will take us as we are and change us into something better than we’ve ever been.
