Are there any sure things? Some say the only sure things are death and taxes. I would beg differ, but that is for another time. Hunters and fishermen love sure things. It seems there is always one place that a fisherman can pick up at least one fish during his tournament run.
I can remember one time that a friend had told me where to deer hunt. He actually directed me to his tree stand. His guarantee was that I would get a shot at a deer. He even told me the time when they would come through. I followed his exact directions and for 2 days I never saw the first deer. That second evening I told him that I had not seen any deer and that I was moving to another place. He couldn’t believe my confession but then added, “If the deer had not been there for two days, they would for sure be there the next day.” Well, he talked me into going back and sure enough, I arrowed a nice doe on the third day. His sure thing was sure, but just delayed.
The big news today is the calculation of our world coming to an end. It was supposed to have happened on May 21st as predicted by an older gentlemen, engineer, and Christian radio broadcaster, Harold Camping. He forecasted a sure thing that never happened. And even though he has revised his predictions, my prediction is that he will be wrong again. There are many reasons why, but again I will also save that discussion for another day as well.
While I could jump on the bandwagon with everyone else in explaining either the folly of or the Biblical mandate against setting an end of the world date, instead, I find myself being struck with an odd question. What message is so sure to me and so needed to be heard by everyone else, that I am willing to risk everything I have to get that message out? My money. My reputation. My integrity. My home. My relationships. What truth is so paramount in my life that I am willing to sell all I have in order that I might gain, as the Bible says, that pearl of great price?
Mr. Camping predicted an end to the world and even gave us the hour it would happen. As a result nobody believed it would happen in that hour. “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:44)
