The Forest City Owls have announced that local MLB pitcher Todd Coffey has signed a coaching contact with the team for an Assistant Coaching position for the 2013 season.

The Owls have been one of the most successful summer collegiate teams in the country posting a 175-101 record since their relocation to Forest City. The team competes in the Coastal Plain League, and the Owls have added league championships in 2009 and 2010.

“I’m real excited about joining the Owls and to definitely be able to try and help these young men get to the next level and the next step.” said Coffey “You know I’ve been there; I’ve seen a lot of things and know some little ways to help improve their game. Just to be a part of the county and be a part of the community while I’m back rehabbing right now and to be able to contribute to baseball is what I love and is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life.”

Coffey was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 41st round of the 1998 MLB draft out of Chase High School in Forest City. Coffey spent four years with the Reds and in 2008 Coffey was claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers and stayed with the team until 2010. Coffey signed with the Washington Nationals in 2011 and then played for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2012 season. During the 2012 season Coffey reinjured his shoulder and would have to undergo Tommy John Surgery and miss the start of the 2013 season. Coffey is currently rehabbing from his shoulder surgery and looking to sign as a free agent in mid-June or early July.

Coffey is popular for his full-speed sprints from the bullpen to the mound when he is brought into games. The Brewers introduced “Coffey Time!” a graphic on the scoreboard that kept track of Coffey’s time to sprint from the bullpen to the pitcher’s mound.

“I am very excited to have Todd join our staff. He will be able to give our bullpen pitchers some great inside knowledge of the Major Leagues and how to help improve their pitching,” said Owls General Manager Jeremy Boler. “This is such a unique opportunity for our team and our players, I am very thankful that Todd wants to help his local team and give back to his community.”

“I think this is a great opportunity for the organization,” says Owls Head Coach David Tufo. “Todd offers a truly unique outlook and experience for us and I am excited for our whole team, not just our pitchers, to learn from him.”
