They won the NFC South, the regular season No.1 playoff seed, beat Seattle and then destroyed Arizona. That leaves only one place left to go....the Carolina Panthers will heading to the Super Bowl.

Carolina as they have all year, took an early lead, but Arizona cut it back to 17-7 in the second quarter. The Panthers, who played too conservative in the second half versus Seattle were anything but that on Sunday. They scored 17 unanswered to take a commanding 34-7 lead and then finished it with back-to-back touchdowns for the 49-15 win.

When it comes down to it, Carolina won in the trenches. Their defensive line pressured Carson Palmer and it led to seven Cardinal turnovers. Palmer was also sacked three times and they only produced 287 yards of offense. Meanwhile, the offensive line was just as effective for the Panthers creating space for 152 yards rushing and allowing Cam Newton to throw for 335 yards.

As Newton said after the game...they weren't done yet! The Panthers are not satisfied until they win the Super Bowl.

For the second time in franchise history, the Panthers are NFC Champions! The only time Carolina played in the Super Bowl, it was against Tom Brady and the Patriots, but this year Brady and company were upset by the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Denver led the whole way and held off a two-point conversion with seconds to go to preserve the win.

Credit Denver's in trenches as well. They got pressure on Brady, they blocked well enough on the offensive line and they scored enough points. On the other side of things, New England's Stephen Gostkowski missed an extra point for the first time in over 500 tries. If not for that miss, Gostkowski could have kicked an extra point to send the game to overtime.

It's just been a magical year in the Carolina's for football. The Tarheels played extremely well, Clemson nearly won the national title and now the Panthers are heading back to the Super Bowl. As for my thoughts on the Super Bowl, I will wait one more week since it's not until February 7.

Men's basketball: Locally on the basketball court, Chase (7-10, 3-7) split the week by falling to Shelby and clipping Draughn. They will go to R-S Central on Friday (1/29).

East Rutherford (8-8, 3-7) fell 66-60 to East Burke last week. They go to Shelby on Friday (1/29) and host Draughn (2/2). As of now, Chase and East Rutherford are fighting for the fourth 2A spot in the SMAC for a wildcard playoff berth.

R-S Central (12-5, 7-2) defeated Draughn and played exceptional in the second half of that game. They have seven games left with a three game slate this week, which ends by hosting Chase on Friday (1/29). The Hilltoppers sit second among 2A contenders and third overall in the conference to this point.

Thomas Jefferson is now back to even overall after beating Cherryville and Highland Tech last week. They Gryphons (8-8, 3-4) host Pine Lake Prep on Friday (1/29).

On the ladies side, R-S Central (14-3, 9-0) still hold a one-game lead in the SMAC over East Burke as they whipped Draughn last week on the play of Kyra Davis and Teja Twitty. Their biggest game of the season comes up on 2/2/16, when they host East Burke.

East Rutherford (12-5, 6-4) split last week's decision with a loss at East Burke and a road win over ACA. They sit 1.5 games ahead for the third spot in the SMAC among 2A playoff contenders.
