If taking photos of wildlife and nature is something you enjoy, then membership in the Carolinas Nature Photographers Association might be one you should consider.

The photography group based mainly in North and South Carolina has a regional group that meets in Forest City each month. While CNPA began in 1992, the Foothills South Region, said John Hamrick, coordinator, started in August 2007. Members in the group come from around Western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina.

Each month the group gathers at the Main Street Meetings building in downtown Forest City to discuss membership news, hear from a guest speaker and share photos. Membership is open to anyone with a love of nature photography, Hamrick said.

"We have people who use anything from a small point-and-shoot to larger digital cameras," he said. "We have some who come because they want to learn how to start taking photos. That's what is good about our monthly outings - there are people there who will help you and show you how to use your equipment."

Outings vary each month. Members recently traveled to Oconee Station State Park in South Carolina. As a member, Hamrick continued, you can go on outings with other groups and also attend their meetings. Each year there is an annual meeting with guest speakers that all can attend. Members also receive a quarterly magazine, Camera in the Wild.

The Foothills South Region of Carolina Nature Photographers Association will meet Monday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. You can attend two meetings, two outings or one of each before joining. For more information, visit foothills south.cnpa-regions.org or contact Hamrick at bjh17fan@yahoo.com.
