Cliffside Elementary School’s fourth graders and their parents enjoyed a North Carolina Pioneer Christmas on Dec. 18. They made a candle decoration similar to the ones the pioneers would have made to decorate their Christmas trees. An article about the early pioneers’ way of life and the way they celebrated Christmas was read by the students and their parents as they looked for topics and details in the reading. The students also entertained their parents using their fluency skills with the reciting of a poem entitled “Christmas Time.” The parents were presented information on fluency and its importance in reading comprehension and were given fluency activities they could use to work with their children at home. The fourth graders and their parents enjoyed kicking off the Christmas season together.
