Only one team remains in the high school basketball playoffs and R-S Central’s girls are the ones hanging around.

After a weather delay, R-S Central’s girls got last Wednesday and downed South Stokes 63-41 at home. Alina Chavez sparked the Lady Hilltoppers with 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter.

The two teams tied at 20, but Central pulled away in the second half. Te’ja Twitty had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win. After their first round win, R-S Central girls coach talked briefly about the victory.

“I didn’t know how we would respond after halftime,” Fuller said. “ Our focus was there and I thought we played Lady Hilltopper basketball in the second half.”

Due to the weather changing the schedule, R-S Central’s ladies could have 4 games this week.

If R-S Central won on Monday at home against Lake Norman Charter, they would face Mountain Heritage on the road. Win that one and it’s on to regionals at the Winston Salem Fairgrounds on Thursday through  and possibly play for a regional title on Saturday. (I will update the information on the Rutherford Weekly Facebook page.)

On the Men’s side, R-S Central got the best of East Burke for the third time this season. However, this time was in the first round of the 2A playoffs. The Hilltoppers went off for 39 points in the final frame as they upset East Burke 81-71 on the road.

Since the snow messed up the schedule, Central, who won Friday at East Burke, turned around and played a very athletic Forest Hills on the road, Saturday. The Hilltoppers showed well, leading the whole first half. Central fell behind in the third period before rallying to force overtime. R-S Central eventually lost 53-49.

East Rutherford’s Men lost 69-66 to Mountain Heritage in the first round on the road. The Cavaliers held a solid 52-41 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Mountain Heritage’s Avery Austin posted 16 of his 25 points in the frame to end the Cavaliers season. Trey Dawkins led the way with 24 points.

East Rutherford Ladies were tied at 22 by halftime, but a 16-4 Mountain Heritage run in the final frame concluded the Lady Cavaliers season. The No.1 seeded Heritage made 14 of their 19 free throw attempts as East Rutherford lost 46-31.

Let’s venture to NASCAR as they were in Atlanta this past week. For the second week in a row, a car hit the wall with no SAFER Barrier. Kyle Busch broke a leg and foot at Daytona, while Jeff Gordon tagged the wall late in Atlanta.

After Busch’s accident, NASCAR vowed that every track would have a SAFER Barrier on every on square inch of wall. While safety is the No.1 priority, they let us down again. Although, Gordon was okay following the crash, they did not follow through with what they said. What more is there to say?

As for the race, Jimmie Johnson is back and Kevin Harvick came home second. My prediction a week ago looks good when I said that those two would fight for the championship this season. Yea, yea, I know it’s early.

Some surprises took shape though. Martin Truex Jr. finished sixth after eighth the week before and sits fifth in points. Congrats to Brett Moffitt! He fills in for Brian Vickers and comes home eighth. Vickers will be back in the car this coming week, but that certainly turned heads this weekend.

On the bad end of things, Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin both crashed. Hamlin sits 19th in points, while Gordon is 35th and sits 70 markers back already. There is time for both to recover, but it’s been a tough start to the season for both.

This weekend, they go to Vegas. I will take Matt Kenseth this weekend, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Joey Logano challenge.
