On May 3, 2018, Marc Combs was named the 2018 Golden Apple Teacher of the Year at WYFF News Channel 4's annual Golden Apple Awards ceremony. Combs is an Occupational Course of Study teacher at R-S Central High School, where he has taught for thirteen years.

Combs was named the Golden Apple Teacher of the Week in October 2017. In what Golden Apple Award representatives describe as the strongest class of honorees in the award's twenty-nine-year history, Combs was one of thirty who were recognized as Teacher of the Week over the 2017-18 school year. Combs was, then, selected as the overall winner from this outstanding group of educators who hail from across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Those who have worked with Combs describe him as being patient and having an unwavering tone and demeanor that help him to reach his students in a way many others cannot. Darius Fuller credits Combs as the mentor who inspired him to get a special education degree. After working with Combs for many years, Fuller obtained his degree and now has his own classroom at R-S Central.

Rutherford County Schools is extremely proud of Marc Combs for his accomplishments and this latest recognition of the wonderful work he does. He is a great example of the type of commitment to students that is exemplified across Rutherford County.
