R-S Central Lady Basketball made Regionals, but were derail two games short of the 2A championship. The Lady Hilltoppers beat South Stokes, Lake Norman Charter,  and Mountain Heritage, but fell to Wilkes Central in Winston Salem.

R-S Central led 16-8 after the first quarter, but Wilkes Central took over after that point. They outscored the Lady Hilltoppers 22-6 in the second quarter and stayed about ten points down points the rest of the way before falling 54-45. R-S Central can’t feel too bad after finishing in the Elite Eight. If it is any consolation, Wilkes Central will go for the 2A title this coming weekend. The good news is that everybody will be back next year for the Lady Hilltoppers.

As for Rutherford County basketball these are strictly my picks for what transpired this season. Te’ja Twitty is the player of the year for the ladies. Twitty did everything that you could ask a junior forward to do. How about 26.6 points and 15 boards per game. So far, she has 1.580 career points and well on her way to rank second as Rutherford County’s all-time scorer. Rachel Camp holds that number and that record may never be broken. Making up the rest of the ladies all-county team this season: Kyra Davis (R-S Central) Kendra Ross (East Rutherford) Tamara Blanton (East Rutherford) Kealynn Watkins (Chase), Emily Elgin (East Rutherford) and Alyssa Edwards (Thomas Jefferson)

On the Men’s picks, this was a little more difficult. Everybody on this roster that I am about to speak of could present a strong case for Rutherford County player of the year. I am giving the honor to Brian Hunt (R-S Central). While statistically Hunt didn’t lead a bunch of categories, Hunt was R-S Central’s go to guy. He was going to give full effort in his 11.5 points per game as he shot 43 percent this season from three point land.

Darius Fuller has to be the coach of the year. In the last 10 years, 173 wins for Fuller who has coached his Lady Hilltoppers to four 20+ win seasons during that time including this season.

Making up the rest of the team include: Calvin Camp East Rutherford, Trey Dawkins (East Rutherford), Zach Anderson (Chase), Jaylon Simmons (Thomas Jefferson) and Josh Searcy (R-S Central). Juwan Barnette honorable mention

Baseball has just started and R-S Central, East Rutherford and Thomas Jefferson are still undefeated after the first week. R-S Central and Chase are still unbeaten in softball

Next up: R-S Central softball will host West Henderson on Friday March 13. R-S Central baseball will host Chase on March 17. East Rutherford will host Burns on Friday March 13. Chase will play at home Friday March 13. Thomas Jefferson will not play at home again until 3/17/15.

UNC-Duke

To no surprise, Tyus Jones is a Carolina Crusher for the second time this season in the rivalry. Duke is the real deal, but North Carolina is dangerous still. The ACC Tournament is the weekend and I wouldn’t be surprised if the two met again. However, I am going to say that they won’t meet in the ACC Tourney. The chances of maybe the two meeting in the NCAA Tourney is possible too.

I will take Duke winning over Virginia in the Championship game. Although, there are a ton of possibilities, the first nine seeded teams are very interesting and can present a challenge to anyone in this tourney.

On the NASCAR scene, Kevin Harvick finally got to victory lane this season. Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have been the most consistent so far in finishing, but Harvick’s team is still a notch above the rest. It doesn’t get any better for the rest of the field. The schedule goes to Phoenix this weekend and that is one of Harvick’s best track. Harvick swept both Arizona races last season. I guess we don’t have to ask ourselves who I am picking this Sunday.
