At the completion of this column, just two of the eight postseason teams this spring season are left in high school sport among Rutherford County teams. R-S Central softball and Thomas Jefferson girls soccer team is all that's left.

R-S Central softball seems to have found it's mojo behind their only senior in Makayla Crawford and freshman pitcher Haley White. The Lady Hilltoppers won their first two playoff games 11-1 and 14-6. Crawford posted two hits against Forest Hills, but upped that to four hits and four RBI in their second round win over West Davidson. They have that similar gleam in their eyes like East Rutherford a year ago. Still, Coach Melvin Digh and company are taking it one game at a time as they should.

R-S Central played Parkwood on 5/19 or 5/20. If Central wins, they will either go to Polk County or host Franklin on Friday (5/22) at 7pm.

Coach Brian Espinoza and his Thomas Jefferson girls soccer pulled of the biggest first round upset. No.1 1A West seed East Montgomery came into the second round of the playoffs undefeated, had a first round bye and average joe, Thomas Jefferson coming into town. The Lady Gryphons of Thomas Jefferson were stout. They held tough tied at 2-2 in regulation and won the shootout 4-2 advancing them to third round action. TJCA beat Queen's Grant 3-0 in round one. They traveled to Union Academy Wednesday and should they win and would likely play at Pine Lake Prep, which would be the third meeting this season on Saturday (5/23).

Chase baseball may have made this most noise as they downed East Rutherford in first round playoff action, 10-3, but lost in second round play, 7-3 to West Wilkes. Although, they are out of the playoffs, they did beat East Rutherford twice in the last week in upset fashion. If anything, the Trojans got better as the season went for sure and the last couple of weeks proved it.

East Rutherford baseball had won at least a first round game during the last eight years. What a coincidence that a county team would end that streak. East pitching and defense carried them to a third place overall in the SMAC this season and the county championship.

Thomas Jefferson baseball made the playoffs, but were shutout by South Stanly in the first round.

The defending 2A state softball champs at East Rutherford lost a battle with West Davidson on the road in first round action. East did fight, down 4-1, they came back to take a 5-4 lead before eventually losing 7-6.

Chase softball was the third area softball team to make the postseason, but the young club was bounced by an experienced West Lincoln group.

R-S Central and East Rutherford were shutout in the first round games of the ladies 2A soccer playoffs. East posted their best season in quite sometime, while Central was up and down all year.

Memorial weekend is upon us. In the South, many focus on the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the North is all about Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With the Coke 600 and Indy 500 here, Im looking forward to a very interesting weekend of racing.

Kyle Busch is back on the scene after a three month long recovery of injures to the right and left leg. He actually looked to be doing well walking around and driving car. It could be a little bit concerning in going 600 miles on Sunday. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a back up driver, considering the length of the event and the fact that his wife is due to deliver the couple first child soon.

As for the 600, I could easily name 10 potential winners or more. I have got to go with Kevin Harvick or Brad Keselowski this weekend. While both have won this season, as well as they ran at Charlotte in the All-Star race, that's who as see as the major threats.

Of course, tradition, prestige, and absolute nerves of steel describes the Indy 500. I have a strong feeling that it could be the better race of the two. So far, some very exciting and terrifying practice moments, which includes three crashes with fortunately no injuries sets up more intrigue for Sunday's 500.
