Locally, the MVP baseball Camp at the MVP Hitting Facility at the corner of Oak St. Ext. and Piney Ridge Rd. in Forest City. Will take place Sat. December 14.

Four instructors will lead the camp that goes on from 9am-2pm. Former Chase High grad and current Houston Astro, Tyler White will host the event. Crest grad, Julian Ridings and current Tampa Bay Devil Ray joins him along with Patton grad Aaron Attaway and former R-S Central pitcher and current Colorado Rocky player, Ryan Arrowood. The camp cost $40 to individual kids, but $30 per player if registered by team. This should be a great camp for the youth of this county to learn the game.

While on the subject of baseball. It was nice to hear that Bobby Cox received the nod into the Baseball Hall of Fame this week. Cox was involved for 42 years in the MLB and has a World Series ring with the Braves. Although, a respected figure/character, who won over 2,500 games as a manager, he hilariously holds the record for being ejected from MLB games.

And having a win streak snapped was bound to happen to the Carolina Panthers. New Orleans, who just got rocked by Seattle last week, unleashed some anger on the Panthers to take the NFC South lead again. The two teams will meet next weekend in Charlotte. The Saints played much better than Carolina after the first quarter which ended an eight game Panther win streak. Carolina punched two field goals through in their first two drives of the game and didn’t sniff the end zone again until late in the fourth. First, Carolina will host the Jets this Sunday with a one game lead in the NFC wild card race.

Top 10 NFL teams this week with three weeks left in the season: 10) Philadelphia 9) Detroit 8) Cincy 7)New England 6)San Francisco 5) Carolina 4)New Orleans 3)Kansas City 2) Seattle 1)Denver.

No, they didn’t beat Florida State, but give Duke credit…they are a much better football team than people believe. Unfortunately, they will have to take on Texas A&M in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Having to defend Jameis Winston to now Johnny Manziel…I feel bad for the Blue Devil defense.

I don’t believe Clemson should have made a BCS bowl game. That’s strange coming out of the mouth of a Clemson proponent. Well, Im about to say something even more unbelievable. Although, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, South Carolina deserved a BCS spot over Clemson. Since FSU is playing for the national title, that bumped the Tigers up a notch to nab the bid.

As I thought after Auburn beat Alabama a couple of weeks ago, I felt like Florida State and Auburn should play for the title. Sure enough, Ohio State loses last weekend and the two best teams in the nation are playing each other for the title.

On paper and film, you have to like FSU. If anybody can pull rabbits out of hats, Auburn is the scariest team FSU could have drawn.

I hate to tell you, but I told you so. Many people were angry with Tarheel basketball after losing to Belmont. However, they just beat No.1 Michigan State on the road.

Finally, Lenoir-Rhyne will play for the NCAA Division II Football semis. While I know there are a number of people who have went to L-R in the county, It got me thinking about Jack Huss. Huss, the current color commentator of L-R sports radio and a Rutherfordton native, graduated from R-S Central and L-R...well, a few years ago. If there is anybody more passionate about L-R sports, it’s Huss. That’s just more incentive to pull for the Bears, who host West Chester at noon on Saturday (Dec. 14). I would expect ESPN or ESPN2 to provide coverage for those who can’t make it or you can listen by radio at www.lrbears.com.
