Knocking out the lights in New Orleans nearly knocked out the Baltimore Ravens.

However, Baltimore’s Raven caught fire in the postseason and that is why they won it all on Super Bowl Sunday.

Although Baltimore nearly collapsed after a lighting malfunction in the stadium caused delay for 35 minutes. Following the delay, it seemed like Baltimore (14-6) had lost their momentum and composure in the third quarter. Sustaining two drives for two field goals in the fourth quarter really showed their mental toughness, winning 34-31 over San Francisco.

No matter what you say about Ray Lewis, he was the franchise for so long as he helped them win their second Super Bowl in as many tries. Retiring after a Super Bowl win, that’s the way most would love to go out.

Quarterback Joe Flacco won MVP, but Jacoby Jones and Auquan Boldin each had a reason to push them as MVP of the game. You really can’t argue with Flacco though. Flacco was nearly flawless in his decision making and precise passing, throwing 22 completions for 287 yards, three touchdowns and without any costly mistakes.

Give it up for San Francisco (13-5-1) though. Some NFL players get just one chance at a Super Bowl and that urgency came to light after halftime. Still, there is a pattern here.

When trailing, San Francisco plays its best postseason football. Down by seven twice to Green Bay, they came back and won by two touchdowns. In Atlanta, the 49ers trailed by 17 to win and make the Super Bowl.

Down by 22 in the Super Bowl, no problem, we can at least make it close at the end. The 49ers had a chance to win, but the Ravens defense wouldn’t allow San Francisco five more yards in its final drive of the game.

In all San Francisco had one too many turnovers, lost the time of possession battle and three more penalties. In a game of inches, battles on every down and mistakes, it all factors in Super Bowl XLVII.

And some want to say that it was the best Super Bowl ever, but I disagree and we will discuss that some other time.

In high school hoops, East Rutherford’s boys took care of Patton with ease and then let loose on a solid Veritas club in a 21-point win. The Cavaliers (15-4, 7-1) played Burns on Tuesday and then host a huge game against Freedom (17-3, 7-2) this Friday (February 8th).

R-S boys played its best game of the year this past Friday, but still fell short at home to Freedom 71-65. The Hilltoppers led nearly three quarters of the contest and gave an incredible effort, but couldn’t finish off a talented Freedom at the end.

On the girls side, R-S Central led over three quarters of the game at home against Freedom, but fell 43-42 and find themselves two games back in second place of the SMAC with Freedom maintaining first place.

East Rutherford’s girls slipped past Patton with 46 points from Rachel Camp, The Lady Cavs likely won’t finish worse than third in the conference since they are two games ahead of Patton now for fourth overall.

Thomas Jefferson’s girls hoops team have a chance to lock up a 1A playoff bid if they can beat Hendersonville for the second time this season at Hendy on Friday (February 8th).
