Raymond Lyles, 85, passed away September 22, 2017.

Born in Mount Holly, NC on September 18, 1932, he was the son of the late Oscar and Pauline Grindstaff Lyles.

Raymond joined the US Navy and served his country aboard the USS New Jersey. He graduated from R-S Central High and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University. He devoted his entire career to Rutherford County Schools where he taught Distributive Education and Driver's Education and coached at R-S Central High. The latter part of his career he served as Rutherford County Schools Vocational Director. During his tenure the former Governor James Hunt awarded him The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This is the highest honor awarded by NC governors to persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their community.

Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty. During their 62 year marriage, they raised a daughter, attended Spencer Baptist Church faithfully, traveled extensively, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his brother J.C. Lyles and sister Sheila Lyles Miller.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Smothers and husband Bill; one granddaughter; step grandchildren, Luke Smothers and wife Allison. Maggie Lockhart and husband Nick, Lillian McBrayer; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Spencer Baptist Church with Rev. Bruce Caldwell and Rev. Billy Vaught officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spencer Baptist Church General Fund, 187 N Oak Street, Spindale, NC 28160.

Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the family.
