Libraries across Rutherford County will come together on June 21 at Crestview Park to host the first-ever Summer Reading Program Field Day.

The field day is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m., and will include a Zumba party, character parade, bubble fun, inflatables, hula hoop fun and more.

"The theme this year for summer reading is 'On Your Mark, Get Set ... Read,'" said Nicole Morse, children's librarian for Rutherford County Library. "I thought what goes better with sports and the first day of summer than field day."

Morse, who promises the event will be an "action-packed three hours," is most excited to take the library outside of the four walls of a physical building.

"The library is so much more than just books," she explained.

Summer reading program participants at all three locations of the Rutherford County Library will be rewarded for their efforts, Morse added.

"This year we will be keeping reading logs differently than in the past," she said. "Rather than having kids count the number of pages they've read, they will keep up with the amount of time they read each day."

Kids won't just have to count time reading books either, she continued.

"With growing subjects like magazines and graphic novels, kids can read those too," she said. "A half an hour is a half an hour, no matter what they are reading."

Those minutes and hours will translate into raffle tickets, which can then be placed toward the prize they'd like to receive, Morse said. Children will get a bubble sheet to track their reading. Bubble sheets are available at the libraries through June 28, and will be available at Summer Reading Field Day as well.
