Listen To Life Is your life like lasagna
My wife makes the best lasagna you’ve ever eaten. I watched her make it once. She prepares her sauce with secret ingredients that I can’t tell you about or she’d have to kill me. She mixes together all of these cheeses. Then she carefully layers all of these ingredients in her special lasagna dish. It’s the layering that attracted my attention.
She puts a layer of noodles, then sauce, then cheese. And she cooks it all together, layer upon layer, until it’s done. Read More ... Dr. Joey Faucette - Posted: Thursday, May 17, 2012 9:54 am |

| Outdoor Truths Another turkey season has all but ended. There’s just a few more days left. It has been a really weird season. It seems the action started earlier this year perhaps because of the warmer than normal temperatures. Even before opening day the toms were strutting, gobbling, and running to the hens. Hunters had to trade their shotguns for binoculars. After opening day the action began as normal, but then a cold spell hit. After that it was as if their mouths were frozen shut – a few gobbles on the roost and then it seemed they moved throughout the day in silence. Just yesterday I watched a long-beard remain totally unaffected by my calling, even though he was without hens. I know, I know, that may say something about my ability to call, but it’s not like they ran off. They just remained uninterested. It’s funny that when you think you have gotten this hunting thing down, nature throws you a curve ball and reminds you how little you really know and how much what you do is determined by things you have no control over. That’s a mouthful of truth! And it goes for more important things than hunting as well. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, May 17, 2012 9:54 am |

| 40th Annual Mayfest Biggest and Best! The 40th Annual Rutherfordton Mayfest turned out to be the biggest and best in its’ history. | Rutherford Weekly Sports Special: Tyler White We have seen some kids from the county go off and play college ball, but we can add another successful one to that list in Chase High graduate, Tyler White.
White, who is in his third year at Western Carolina University plays baseball for the Catamounts and also helped Chase to one of its best seasons in 2009 with a 15-8 record and a third round 2A playoff appearance. Last summer, he topped off a great season with the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League by helping them win the CPL title.
In NCAA play at WCU, White hasn’t backed off from being a dangerous threat at the plate. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, May 17, 2012 9:39 am |

Listen To Life How much “drama” is there in your life?
When our daughter was in middle school, I discovered that it’s far more traumatic than you might imagine—for her that is. There was so much “drama” in middle school. The “he said/she said” creates “issues” for these kids.
Frankly I don’t remember all of this “drama.” But I was more into baseball, fishing, and hunting than relationships back then. It was a different era. We all wanted to wear Levis, I do remember that. And I do recall getting a lecture or two about peer pressure. Maybe that was what sufficed for our drama. Perhaps with us it was about peer pressure. Read More ... | Outdoor Truths I’ve always heard that writing is more about perspiration than inspiration. It’s true. Even though it is very fulfilling to write about the outdoors, it is also difficult at times to continue to find worthy subjects and stories. Sometimes my mind soars with information faster than my fingers can type. Other times those same fingers seem like they’re waiting impatiently for the next command. During the times of inspiration I can’t wait to get to the computer. During other times I dread its call. Every writer loves the moments of inspiration.
I’ve discovered over the years there is a catalyst that induces inspiration. That catalyst is “presence.” Here’s what I mean. I find that when I’ve been too busy to be outside, the inspirational juices dry up. But when I am in the presence of the water or woods those same juices began to flow. Read More ... “The Ballad Of Nancy Hanks” Editors Note: Once again, the play “The Ballad Of Nancy Hanks” was performed by the Rutherford Community Theatre. This time, it was presented at Concord Baptist Church. This made it a special event, because it is claimed that Concord Baptist is where Nancy Hanks attended and took her son, little Abraham. It is claimed that Bostic is where he was born. The mystery of Abraham Lincoln’s birth still continues to this day. This article is offered as a suggestion which could benefit Rutherford County. The play is both interesting and well done. East Baseball, Chase & East Softball Gain SMAC Share, Playoffs Next The last time we left off, East Rutherford was all alone in first place to capture the South Mountain Athletic Conference baseball title, but instead they will share the title with Burns this season.
Burns won their final two games, while East earned a split for the week as a lost to Shelby produced the shared SMAC crown outcome.
However, all is not lost for East and two other county baseball teams in general who have made the playoffs which start this Friday. East Rutherford will host North Lincoln as a No.1 seed and have home field advantage throughout the postseason since the SMAC has seeding priority this time around in NCHSAA weird playoff system. That would take forever to explain. Trust me! Read More ... Posted: Thursday, May 10, 2012 8:55 am |
Listen To Life Are you hanging on until you’re ripe?
When I lived on the coast of North Carolina, just across the road from us was a field of about a hundred acres of strawberry plants. The owners ran an international plant shipping business and harvested berries to sell.
Migrant workers began picking in early April each year. Most if not all of the strawberries they harvested weren’t ripe, mostly red on the outside, but not through the middle. They didn’t spoil like this on the way to the store. Read More ... Dr. Joey Faucette - Posted: Thursday, May 3, 2012 9:18 am |

| Outdoor Truths If you have hunted for a considerable amount of time, you can trace your evolution. While once any deer would do; soon you held your shot for something larger. But what do you do after that?
I met a friend the other day that makes recurve bows by hand. He takes each piece of wood and allows its own characteristics to determine what it will ultimately look like. Most have some type of crook that doesn’t allow a perfect product, but they are extremely effective in the hands of a skilled archer. Not only does my friend make these bows, but he hunts with them as well. And I have seen his pictures of success with both turkeys and deer. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, May 3, 2012 9:18 am |

| East Rutherford Reclaims SMAC; Panthers and NASCAR On Agenda Too The Cavaliers are used to big games and pressure situations at this point. The baseball program has seen their share of those moments and that in turn may have helped them get a monster win over Burns last week.
East Rutherford now takes over sole possession of the SMAC after Ridge Beheler fired a complete game shutout against the Bulldogs.
East Rutherford (15-4, 9-1) already playoff bound, must win one of the final two conference games to earn the No.1 2A seed from the SMAC. Beating Shelby at home on Tuesday (5/1/12) would be the two for one deal as they would capture the No.1 2A seed and finish no worse than gaining a share of the SMAC title. Read More ... The address of success - 284 Social Circle - greets all visitors. |
| facebook Celebrates Rutherford County! You could call it a celebration, but it was more of a salute or thank you from both Facebook, North Carolina and especially Rutherford County. One might say, it was a mutual admiration party enjoyed by over 300 people. In the true tradition of our heritage, it was declared a pig pickin’. The big white tent at Facebook’s 284 Social Circle held dignitaries and honored guests. The speeches were both appropriate and gratefully, brief. To use today’s jargon, it was a magnificent “shout out” by everyone involved. All parties involved in the creation of Facebooks data center conveyed appreciation and especially pride. After all from all over our nation and the world, Rutherford County was chosen above anyone else. It definitely was a magnificent achievement. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, May 3, 2012 8:56 am |

Listen To Life Made a mistake lately?
As I mentioned yesterday, I was born with a head full of wonderfully curly hair and I was often compared to Shirley Temple as a child. I had no idea who Shirley Temple was since I was a toddler, but I always said “thank you” as my mother taught me. One day, my dad and I were shopping together and I saw a display of Shirley Temple videos. I got all excited and ran up to the videos and grabbed one. I turned around and yelled out to my dad in my loud two-year-old voice, “Look, Daddy! They made a movie about me!” He bought me three of them because I was so adorable. Read More ... | Outdoor Truths I left the woods after an unsuccessful evening turkey hunt. On my way out I noticed where some of my feathered friends had been scratching. Of course I had to slip out of my truck and see if I could locate one of those birds for the next morning. Sure enough, he was there high in a tree just waiting on me to show up the following day to introduce him to my Winchester 1300. There was only one problem. I had already made other arrangements for the next morning. And even though they were not carved in stone, they would take some real creativity to change. After some calls were made and planning was done, I was still unable to change my original appointment. Plan B went into effect. Perhaps I could adjust my plans and go in just a little later and catch that bird on his morning stroll back down the mountain. Sounds good……. But again, plan B was squashed with authority. I ended up only wondering “what if”, the next day. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, April 26, 2012 9:18 am |

Listen To Life Do you tell stories?
The most common question I get from emails and as I do speaking engagements is: “How do you come up with all of those stories?” And that’s a great question. I write and record about 260 stories a year.
I guess there are two short answers: One is I Listen to my Life and just share what happens. And the second, based on the first, is I don’t do anything—writing stories, or anything else—in life alone. I have help everywhere I go and in everything I do. Read More ... | Outdoor Truths Spring is made for the outdoors. It seems that everything that inspires us has its beginnings outside. Whether you hunt, fish, hike, bike, run, play sports, garden, or simply mow your grass, it feels empowering to engage in all of these under the clear skies and in the clean air of springtime. While fall will mesmerize us with its panoramas, spring will motivate us with its pursuits. It is the season of life and the preparation that comes with it. The birds will build their nests; the animals will give birth to their young; and the trees and plants will unfold their blankets of green that perfectly match a sparkling blue sky. It is a painting that has been supernaturally brushed. Read More ... Posted: Thursday, April 19, 2012 9:07 am |
