Got an encouraging word?

My Dad had a cornea transplant. I went with him to have the surgery and also to his first follow-up visit.

It’s a fairly painful recovery, with your eye constantly feeling scratchy which makes your head hurt. So by the time that follow-up visit rolled around, my Dad was pretty tired of the whole affair and feeling a little down.

At least that’s how he went into the follow-up visit. But when he came out, he was a new man.

“The doctor said I’ve improved 250% in only two weeks!” he told me. “I’m making great progress.”

My Dad left the doctor’s office a different man than one who came in. He was encouraged.

Even though a friend took me on my first turkey hunt, my first kill came while hunting alone. That morning I remember that my tools of the trade amounted to a Lynch box call and a ten gauge H and R shotgun. No slate calls and definitely no mouth calls. I can also remember moving from place to place on this farm without having much confidence. Late in the morning I made my way to an area that was known to hold deer. I crossed a hay field and crawled under a barbed wire fence before giving that box call another go. As soon as I slid the lid of that call across the box, I heard a turkey to my left.

180 Year Old Church Presents A Unique Supper
180 Year Old Church Presents A Unique Supper
Most fund raisers at churches consist of a poor man’s supper, spaghetti, or barbecue plates. Four years ago when the brotherhood at the 180 year old church, Coopers Gap Baptist, within the Lake Lure Community wanted a fund raiser, they decided on a unique supper. They decided it would be in February because of the hunting season and they called it a Wild Game Supper.

How’s your car running?

Imagine with me for a moment that before you start your car or truck each morning to go to work or school or wherever else you’re going that you put six grains of sand in your gas tank.  That’s right, six grains of sand in your gas tank.

Okay, it’s only six grains of sand, but if you do it every morning, how long do you think it’ll take before your vehicle won’t run?  Soon, right?  That great engine would be a mess, unable to do what it was designed to do.

Negative, unpleasant thoughts dropped into your mind affect you in the same way.  They break down your mental motor.  You’re broken down by worry, frustration, and feelings like you don’t matter to anyone.  Pretty soon, you’re broken down beside life’s highway and you can’t go on.

Junior Wins 500, UNC Hoops Getting Hot
Junior Wins 500, UNC Hoops Getting Hot

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he ran the race of his life on Sunday Night. It sure paid off in victory lane at Daytona.

Junior won his second Daytona 500, 10 years after the first time he did so. It’s been a year and a half before his last victory at Michigan and I think he really did have the best car Sunday.

He did a great job in every aspect, but picking up a piece of bare bond on the last caution flag helped the aerodynamics of the car and Jeff Gordon’s push on the restart didn’t hurt things either.

Outdoor Truths
Outdoor Truths
There’s no doubt one of the thrills of my life is being able to get outdoors with a bow, gun, or rod. This time of year I am especially nostalgic concerning this. When you get cooped up because of the weather you really begin to appreciate those things you are unable to do. This is when the gun and bait shops really come in handy. As I have said before, I am so glad these places encourage loitering. They know that many times talking about past adventures and future expeditions are a balm to our restless, outdoor soul. During periods of inactivity, I am drawn to these places just as much as I am drawn to the outdoors during better weather.
