Receiving some good news or acknowledgment is always most welcome. At Rutherford Regional Health System, two national recognitions reflect the continuing efforts of this hospital to be the best.

RRHS was named one of America’s 100 Great Community Hospitals by the prominent publication, Becker’s Hospital Review of Chicago, Illinois. In addition, it was also named a Community Value Leadership Award Five-Star Hospital for 2012 by Cleverly & Associates of Columbus, Ohio. These two prestigious acknowledgments definitely reflect the commitment which this hospital has to the community it serves. It is the third consecutive year Rutherford Regional has received national recognition from Becker’s and the fourth year from Cleverly & Associates. RRHS was honored as one of America’s 100 Great Community Hospitals and a provider offering exceptional value to the community. The term “community hospital” refers to hospitals with fewer than 550 patient beds and that have minimal teaching programs. The Cleverly Award is even more impressive considering it was the single health provider selected from Cleveland, Polk, McDowell counties in North Carolina as well as Cherokee and Spartanburg counties in South Carolina. This is indicative of a great achievement.

Cindy Buck, Interim CEO for Rutherford Regional said: “It’s great! “ In an interview with this dedicated lady, she emphatically stated that “We want to serve the entire region. These awards definitely showcase that we are here to serve in a quality manner.” She emphasized her beliefs stating: “Awards such as this can be seen as an indicator of an organization focused on improving and growing. The awards benefit us in that it shows our community and others that we are dedicated to providing excellent care in challenging times, while working to always be better and to offer new or expanded services. I’m proud of all RRHS staff, providers and leaders to receive these two very impressive honors, but I am especially pleased that our community can also be proud of the people who give their hearts and souls to this health system. We look forward to many more years of high performance.”

To better understand the value of these awards, one must delve into how they are achieved. In the case of Cleverly & Associates, they have developed a CVI (Community Value Index). This examines approximately 80 critical indicators of hospital financial performance. Specifically, the CVI was created to provide an assessment of a hospital’s performance in four areas: financial strength and reinvestments, cost of care, pricing and quality.

James Cleverly of Cleverley & Associates said: “The topic of hospital value is increasingly being discussed. Issues of pricing and community benefit have been well-publicized but little has been offered outside of this index to measure the broad scope of value.”

For Becker’s, its list analyzed information, recognition and rankings from a variety of industry sources, including iVantage Health Analytics, Thomson Reuters, HealthGrades and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Suffice to say, our Rutherford Regional Health System continues to lead the way and these awards confirm the commitment of the program.
