Robert Gilmer Scruggs, 68, of the Hollis community, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016.

Born on January 5, 1948, he was the son of the late Jesse Avery and Delores Summers Scruggs. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Glenda Brooks Scruggs; three daughters, Kristy Scruggs Holland and husband, Billy, of Lattimore; Heather Scruggs Church and husband, Josh, of Gaffney, SC; and Amanda Scruggs of the home. He was blessed with three grandchildren.

He is also survived by two sisters, Martena Scruggs Poteat, and husband Milton, of Carrollton, GA and Freida Scruggs Cole and husband Danny of Greenville, SC and three brothers, Charles Scruggs and wife Marilee of Forest City, Roger Scruggs and wife Brenda of Shelby, NC and Randy Scruggs and wife Tricia of Spindale. Two sisters-in-law: Maxine Brooks Marlowe of Bostic and Diana Gibson Brooks of Forest City.

Robert was a graduate of East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College. Robert worked as a route supervisor for Scott Vending Company for 27 years until retirement. After retirement, he also worked at Harrill Brothers Wholesale and as a custodian at Cliffside Elementary School.

Robert loved history, genealogy, bluegrass music, traveling, and barbecue. He was active in his community. He served as a town councilman for the town of Bostic for several terms and as a Bostic Volunteer firefighter, where he was named Fireman of the Year in 1987. He was also a volunteer in the Rutherford County 4-H program and was a leader of the Hollis Happy Helpers 4-H club. Robert loved his church, Big Springs Baptist in the Hollis community. He currently serves as a deacon and on various committees, including Sunday School teacher, Children's Bible Drill leader, etc. He loved to help others as a member of the Big Springs Brotherhood.

Funeral services were conducted at Big Springs Baptist Church of Hollis with Reverend Paul Scott and Reverend Jim Richardson officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
