The volunteers that cleaned Section 4 of the Broad River (River Road to Grays Road).

On Saturday, May 12th, volunteers from the community came together to participate in the ROC Broad River Spring Sweep hosted by Rutherford Outdoor Coalition (ROC). These volunteers had a great day floating and cleaning multiple sections of the Broad River. A huge thanks goes out to all those who participated! Many of these volunteers were River Stewards that partner with ROC to help keep the river clear of trash and debris throughout the year.

The Spring Sweep was very successful with more than 40 bags of trash and 8 tires, including a large tractor tire, being removed from the Broad River. It was also a very active day for wildlife and volunteers saw a black rat snake, a baby turtle, a turkey, and a few geese along the way. The weather was warm and sunny and volunteers had fun while cleaning the river.

ROC will be hosting another river clean-up on September 15th. Contact Dana Bradley at dana@rutherfordoutdoor.org if you would like to participate. ROC hosts many events each month including group hikes and river floats. They also host a Walking Club that meets at Summey Park in Forest City every Tuesday at 5:30 pm and at the Purple Martin Greenway every Thursday at 5:30 pm.

You can find more info about these events and others on their weekly schedule of events published in Rutherford Weekly each week. It is also posted on the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition Facebook page each Monday. For info, visit www.rutherfordoutdoor.org.
