Rutherford Regional Health System (RRHS), a presenting sponsor of the 2014 Lake Lure Olympiad on August 15-17, has announced it will bring back the popular “Couch to Cart Path” two-mile fun run that attracted over 100 participants at the 2013 Olympiad.

The race, aimed at urging first-time runners to train for a low-impact event, again will be held along the front nine holes of Bald Mountain Golf Course and finish on the Rumbling Bald Resort beach. The event takes place on Friday, August 15, at 6 p.m.

RRHS has chosen to place special emphasis on this event at the Olympiad because of the organization’s increasing involvement in outdoor and wellness activities around Rutherford County. Also a strong supporter of the Rutherford Outdoor Coalition, RRHS hopes to encourage all citizens in the county to be mindful of healthy eating and exercise habits, and organizers say a two-mile run is a good first step to take toward developing that lifestyle.

“We are deeply invested in the health and well-being of our community,” said Cindy Buck, president and CEO of Rutherford Regional. “With a little urging we hope to persuade people to be a part of this event who may not have ever undertaken an exercise regimen like running. Our hope is that this event gives those first-timers a very achievable goal among other participants just like themselves. Our organization took this challenge last year and RRHS had nearly 75 employees and family members to participate. We ask everyone to join us for the fun again this year.”

Tips and training schedules for beginning runners can be found on the Olympiad’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/LakeLureOlympiad. Details and information about entry fees for the “Couch to Cart Path” event also can be found at www.LakeLureOlympiad.com. Early bird registration discounts are available for adults ($10) and children ($5) who sign up by April 15.

Heralded as one of “America’s Best Lakes” by USA TODAY in 2012, Lake Lure, North Carolina, is home to the Lake Lure Olympiad Sports Festival. Athletes every year say it is the scenic beauty and abundance of welcoming volunteers that make the Olympiad experience truly special and unique. Celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2014, the Lake Lure Olympiad is a nonprofit organization that has given back nearly $250,000 to area charities. Hosted by Rumbling Bald Resort on Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park, with sponsorship support from Rutherford Regional Health System, the races and the views are sure to entertain spectators and visitors alike.
