Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics has announced the successful implementation of the CelluTome™ Epidermal Harvesting System -a minimally invasive tool for harvesting epidermal micrografts in an outpatient setting. This approach was rated number one among the “Top 5 Most Interesting Wound Care Products of 2014” by Wound Source.

Chronic wounds represent a significant burden to patients and the incidence is on the rise. Conditions like diabetes and vascular insufficiency complicate the treatment and care of these wounds. Traditional split-thickness skin grafts are not always the best option for these patients because of the impact to the donor site. Less invasive alternatives and new technologies are becoming increasingly more important in the care for patients with chronic wounds.

The CelluTome™ Epidermal Harvesting System allows clinicians at Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics to harvest autologous epidermal grafts, with minimal, if any, pain, bleeding or scarring to the patient.   The device uses suction and warmth to consistently produce thin grafts that are then transferred to the wound to aid in healing.

“The beauty of this new tool is that it provides a skin graft with minimal impact to the donor site,” explained Lonnie Lassiter, MD. “This means we can use the patient’s own skin to heal the wound without going to the operating room.. The whole process takes less than an hour and can be performed right here in the wound care center, which truly transforms the way physicians have traditionally used skin grafting.”

Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics was the first in North Carolina to employ the CelluTome™ System technology. Since bringing it into the center in January, more than 20 patients have been able to benefit from this advanced technology.

Physician referrals are not required to visit Rutherford Wound Care & Hyperbarics, an outpatient department of Rutherford Regional Health System. The office, located at 112 Sparks Drive in Forest City, is staffed by three board certified physicians, including two general surgeons, and a registered nurse. The office can be reached by calling 828-351-6000, and more information is available at www.MyRutherfordRegional.com/WoundCare.
