Trent Hayes, born and raised in Cliffside and 1994 graduate of Chase High School, has been nominated for the prestigious Newell Award.

The 'Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award' recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities and is based on examples of service, leadership, and shared experiences from community members. The winner of The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award will receive $2,500 for their school and $10,000 as the National Award recipient.

The award is named after William "Pinky" Newell, Purdue University's head athletic trainer for 27 years, who was a founding member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and instrumental in formalizing education programs specific to athletic training. Widely recognized as the "Father of Athletic Training," Newell's dedication and expertise created the best practices for athletic trainers around the world, molding athletic training into the highly respected profession it is today.

Mr. Hayes explains, "Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers are employed in different settings such as, secondary schools, hospitals, colleges, professional sports, military and industrial environments.

Trent Hayes has been an athletic trainer for 18 years. He is currently the Sports Medicine Coordinator at CaroMont Health, Gastonia, NC. He also provides athletic training services for Gaston Christian School. Prior to his time at CaroMont Health, he spent a few years at McDowell Hospital in Marion as their Athletic Training Supervisor where he developed the hospital's Sports Medicine program and provided athletic training services to McDowell High School.

Mr. Hayes spent eight years in Greenville, SC, five of which were with the Greenville Health System, and was the athletic trainer for Greenville High School and a manager in their athletic training network which was comprised of 48 athletic trainers. Mr. Hayes was with Vaughn, Buchannan, and Shelly PT, worked in the clinic as an aid, and also provided athletic training services to Shannon Forest Christian School and Wren High School. Prior to that, he worked for Clemson Sports Medicine from 2000-2002 as their Director of Sports Medicine in Belmont, NC, while providing athletic training services to high schools in Gaston County. He was the athletic trainer at Crest Senior High School from 1999-2000.

His professional career also includes Professional Bull Riding (PBR) event coverage, collegiate summer baseball, minor league football, and youth sports. Additionally, he was chosen as an athletic trainer for the 2009 North/South Boys' All-Star basketball game in Charleston, SC. Mr. Hayes is a member of the NATA, MAATA, NCATA, and SCATA. He is a 2016 graduate of Leadership Gaston, and a member of the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Leadership Institute.

On being nominated for this prestigious award, Trent tells us, "It is an honor to be selected as a nominee for this award. Athletic training is not a profession one gets into for accolades. I got into the profession because I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to help educate school administrators, coaches, student-athletes and parents on sports medicine. I wanted to provide the best care possible to help get people healthy and return them to activity."

Trent and his wife, Janette, have been married for 12 years and are the proud parents of a nine year old son, Maddox. His parents, Patti and Douglas Hayes, reside in Cliffside.
