Throughout Rutherford County, there are many companies which embrace Relay for Life and contribute in the fight to find a cure for cancer by raising funds. Perhaps the “leader of the pack” in the continuing efforts to raise money for this cause, is none other than the Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation. They are non-stop in anything and everything that can raise some money to contribute to Relay for Life.

One of their biggest fund raisers is the “Miss Rutherford EMC Womanless Beauty Pageant”. They have sponsored this event and put together a very entertaining show six times thus far. The events have produced over $53,000.

This year alone, almost $6000 was raised. The coordinator for the event is Rutherford EMC employee, Shelia Guffey.

She has been with the company for 18 years and is one of many who support the programs. She said it could not have been done without the tremendous help of General Manager, Joseph H. Joplin. He constantly approves and encourages every effort the company makes to raise money for Relay for Life.

Rutherford EMC sponsors big and small events. In addition to the womanless beauty pageant they also have a golf tournament (their largest fundraiser), a book sale, yard sales, employees luncheons, raffles, dinners - basically anything and everything that will raise money. Their dedication and determination is ongoing and non-stop.

Shelia Guffey says she and others have a lot of help in all the programs. This year the beauty pageant was dedicated to honor two Rutherford EMC employees, Dianne Stockton and Christee Lovelace,  who passed away from cancer this year. Dianne Stockton had worked there for 37 years and Christee Lovelace worked with Rutherford EMC for 25 years.

The “Miss Rutherford EMC Womanless Beauty Pageant” was held Saturday, August 18 at 7 p.m. It was a fun filled evening that included special presentations by previous winners which were hilarious. The commitment which both the volunteer staff and contestants make for an evening of rollicking fun is to be commended. This year, in addition to two doctors, they even had a pastor involved (Reverend David Hawkins who chose the name Pearl E. Gates). The self sacrifice they make to put on a great show is always overwhelming. With stage names like: Bodices Burley, Norma Jean, Curry Mathis, Palmer Lomanaco, Owens Smith, Unique Devine, Hunter Twain, Senorita Boom Boom, Corvetta, Pearl E. Gates, Trixie, Kevi Licious, Twinkle Toes Troyanna, and Kurtina Aquilera the show “must go on” and the audience didn’t know what to expect next. The antics of Master of Ceremonies, McVaughn Gee always adds to the hysterical fun times. He is picked on and picked over by the contestants. The audience loved the special show put on by previous winners Princie Pal (Brad Teague, Principal of East Rutherford - 2009 winner) and KiKi LeFreak (Keith Ezell, Principal at Mt. Vernon 2010). What a routine they put on!

This years winner was Kevi Licious aka Kevin Campbell who works with American Greetings in Forest City, with second and third runners were Dr. Jerald Delagarza as Senorita Boom Boom and Dr. Christ Burley as Bodacious Burley.

The Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation is to be commended for their constant dedication to Relay For Life. They have become the number one fundraiser in Rutherford County. Their programs are an outstanding example of what community commitment is all about.
