They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But in the case of items for sale at the Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group Yard Sale on March 23 from 8 a.m. to noon, they will also serve as treasure for cancer patients in our community.

This year marks the fourth annual Pink Ladies Yard Sale, said Freda Ledford, a member of the support group who also heads up the sale.

“It’s turned out to be a very profitable thing for us to do,” Ledford said. “We always have a good crowd.”

In years past, the proceeds from the sale have been given to Rutherford Regional Health Foundation to benefit the mammogram program, which pays for mammograms for uninsured women who meet certain criteria. This year, however, the Pink Ladies decided to use the project to help fund renovations to the wig room at Rutherford Regional’s Cancer Resource Center.

The wig room houses not only wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments, but also other accessories.

“We are fortunate to have so many women in the community volunteer their time and skills to provide hand-crafted hats, scarves, throws, drain pounches and camisoles,” said Jamie Ingraham, Rutherford Regional’s Cancer Outreach program manager. “The patients are very appreciative of the love and care that go into each of these items. By expanding the storage capacity in the wig room, we’ll be able to better organize and store everything so that we can find the perfect fit for each lady.”

In addition to those items, the Cancer Resource Center has a partnership with Smith’s Drugs to provide mastectomy fittings and the American Cancer Society for wigs.

“The wig room houses these functions as well,” Ingraham said. “We encourage patients to visit us at the Center Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4pm so that we can help them look and feel their best as they undergo treatment for their cancer.”

The yard sale features a variety of items, Ledford said, from household items like pictures and flower arrangements to clothing and toys.

“We have pretty much anything you can think of,” she said.

And there’s always room for more – donations of yard sale items will be taken at the Cancer Resource Center through March 22. Receipts are available for those who would like one.
