Victory Junction, a camp for children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses, recently received a check for $2,500 from the Lake Lure Olympiad and Rutherford Regional Health System, a presenting sponsor for the 2012 event.

The donation, said Carolyn Mullins, vice president of medical development with Victory Junction, will provide camp for one camper.

“It’s very impressive to have a full campership donated from this organization,” Mullins said.

The Lake Lure Olympiad is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. Anchored by its ‘Three Races in Three Days Challenge,’ the Lake Lure Olympiad is a family-friendly sports festival that brings people together in the spirit of friendly competition for the broader purpose of promoting health and wellness, charitable giving, regional tourism and economic development.

“The 2012 Olympiad raised $24,500 to be dispersed among local charities,” said Kay Dittmer, chairman of the Lake Lure Olympiad. In addition to Victory Junction, the 2012 Olympiad benefitted the Lake Lure Fire Department, Fairfield Mountains Volunteer Fire Department, Bills Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Chimney Rock Volunteer Fire Department, Hickory Nut Gorge EMS, Memorial to Fallen Firefighters of Rutherford County, Outreach Food for Children’s Backpack Program and Guardian ad Litem.

“We decided to donate to a charity outside out of our immediate area and chose Victory Junction because of its dedication to improving the quality of life for seriously ill children,” Dittmer added.

Victory Junction is one of a few camps in the United States of its kind. The program offers a week of exhilarating, challenging and nurturing fun under comprehensive but unobtrusive 24-hour medical supervision. There are normally around 128 campers per week during the summer, Mullins said.

The mission of both the Lake Lure Olympiad and Victory Junction fit well with Rutherford Regional’s own mission, said Cindy Buck, CEO of Rutherford Regional Health System.

“Our goal is to promote health and wellness, and we just appreciated this partnership this year,” Buck said.

Rutherford Regional Health System, which operates seven physician practices and The Clinic at Walmart in addition to Rutherford Children’s Care, has been recognized nationally by Becker’s Hospital Review for featuring one of America’s top community hospitals and by Thomson Reuters as a four-time Top 100 hospital.
