Rutherford County senior citizens are encouraged to register for this year’s Senior Games now through March 6 at the Rutherford County Senior Center.

The North Carolina Senior Games began in 1983. Senior Games is a year-round health program that seniors can and should benefit from, said Barbara Hill, activity and Senior Games coordinator for the Rutherford County Senior Center.

“Seniors still like to compete, and this gives them that opportunity,” Hill said. “Senior Games is all about fun, fitness, family, friends and fellowship.”

There are many avenues for seniors to share their talents, Hill continued. Categories for Senior Games includes sporting events as well as SilverArts. SilverArts includes heritage arts like crochet, quilting, pottery, knitting, jewelry making, woodworking and needlework; visual arts - drawing, photography, sculpture and painting; and performing arts - vocal, instrumental, dance, line dance and comedy/drama.

SilverArts will be held March 16-20 with performing arts on March 27. Sporting events are scheduled for April 2-17.

To register, stop by the Senior Center to pick up a registration form, or call 828-287-6409 for more information.
