Senior Games torch lighting and fun events

The 2016 Rutherford County Senior Games officially kicked off on April 8 with a variety of events. A fun walk and balloon release were held before a special musical performance by Leeanne Summey's third grade class from Spindale Elementary. Following their performance, Senior Games Director Barbara Hill told participants that this year there 136 total seniors taking part in the games, with 92 of those in sporting events. "There are 34 first time participants, with the youngest being age 50 and the oldest age 93," Hill said. Mabel Twitty lighted the Senior Games torch before participants took part in carnival games for prizes and enjoyed popcorn. Senior Games sporting events will continue through Friday, and closing ceremonies are planned for May 6.
