Last Friday was another good night on the gridiron as Rutherford County went 3-1, but all four had a good showing.

It’s bound to happen one day, but last Friday night wasn’t the night. Shelby had a 48-0-1 record against the Chase Trojans in football. Everything went well for nearly a half for Chase, but Shelby roared back for a 35-10 outcome.

Chase led 10-0 after Austin Smith intercepted a pass for a touchdown and Omar Jimenez posted a field goal, but Shelby scored two touchdowns to go up 14-10 at the half and eventually extend the streak.

Although, it was a valiant effort, Chase (1-4, 0-2) will go to winless Draughn this Friday in hopes of gaining their first conference win of the season.

Meanwhile, the first Friday night victory for Rutherford County went to Thomas Jefferson in a 40-16 triumph over Asheville School. The first half wasn’t exactly pretty, but Thomas Jefferson held a 13-9 lead at the half. However, the second act was all Gryphons.

Mason Martin scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Bradley Freels and Freels would score later on a three yard run. Michael Minder also scored a defensive touchdown by recovering a fumble in the end zone to reel off 27 straight points before a Asheville School finalized the score with a late touchdown.

The Gryphons will travel to Georgia and face Rabun Gap (4-1) before conference play begins.

In Icard, East Rutherford (3-2, 1-1) cruised past East Burke 41-18. Calvin Camp (138 yard/4TD) and Saibyn Ruff (78 yards/2TD) helped East Rutherford rush for 244 yards as a team. East Rutherford also forced three turnovers and held a 21-6 lead by half. The Cavaliers will get a much needed week off and host Burns on October 3.

R-S Central (3-2, 1-1) on the other hand battled adversity. Starting quarterback Tyrese Tate is now out with a hyper extended knee as he was hurt during the Shelby game last Monday. The Hilltoppers lost that game only 35-20, but on just three days of rest they battled Draughn at the end of the week at home.

Central held a 21-14 lead at the half, but managed a 30-14 victory.

Trey Clark did a commendable job as the quarterback, but the defense was the second half story. Desmond A safety, a Desmond Whitesides 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown and the Hilltoppers held the Wildcats scoreless during the entire second half to notch their first conference win of the season.

Things don’t get easier as they make the short drive to Boiling Spring this Friday to take on their toughest test so far this season in the Crest Chargers (4-0, 1-0).

On the soccer field, Chase (8-1-1, 7-0) is still rolling. They played Shelby (7-3-1, 6-0-1) the past Tuesday (Sept 22) in a huge match. To date, Chase had only allowed two goals in conference play. Nube Jimenez has scored 14 goals this season, while Jose Vasquez has eight. Preston Walker has 10 assists so far this season.

And the Atlanta Braves have concluded their season winning just 18 times in the last 48 games. They have also lost 14 games in September. Two months ago, the Braves were just a half game shy of the NL East lead and now, they are 15 games behind Washington. In short, they are all together out of a contention for a wildcard spot. There are seven games left in regular season, but Atlanta had packed it in a long time before that.
