   Not just for warm weather, South Mountains State Park offers year round outdoor enjoyment including camping, educational programs, fishing, picnicking and trails.

   The most popular hiking trail is the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail which takes you to a spectacular waterfall dropping 80 feet. There is also a wheelchair-accessible trail which travels along the scenic Jacob Fork River. You can also travel on 29 miles of horseback trails or a 17 mile mountain-bike trail.

   Some of the educational programs offered in January include:

Jan. 8, Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild. How dangerous are black bears? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 11am in the Visitor Center.

Jan. 8 & 9: The Roles and Responsibilities of a NC State Park Ranger. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2pm.

Jan. 15 & 16: Tracks. Join a Ranger to learn about common animal tracks and their makers. Come make your own tracks to take home. Program will include indoor and outdoor activities. Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2pm.

Jan. 15 & 22: Tree Cookies. Hold the milk please! Kids join a Park Ranger to learn about tree growth by looking at tree cookies. Learn how tree rings show patterns of change in a trees life as well as changes in the area where it grows. Program starts 11am at the Visitor Center.

Jan. 22 & 23: Where am I? How to Use Map and Compass. Solid knowledge of basic map and compass skills are essential when traveling in the backcountry. If you have a compass bring it and test your skills in the field. Starts at 2pm at Jacob Fork Parking Area.

Jan. 29: Skulls and Skins. Look for our interesting display of skulls and skins in the Visitor Center. Drop in between 2-3pm and hear about some of the animals that call South Mountains State Park home.

Jan. 30: Wintergreen Hike. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the Hemlock Nature Trail and learn about some of the plant species that stay green year long. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2pm for this easy one mile walk.
