North Carolina Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin announced today that the Rutherfordton Fire District completed its routine inspection and received a 4 rating, effective Monday, Feb. 1, 2016. The inspection, conducted by officials with the Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), is required on a regular basis as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS). Among other things, the routine inspections look for proper staffing levels, sufficient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of a water source.

The NCRRS rating system ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified fire department by the state), with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in its district. Higher ratings can also significantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fire district..

"I'd like to congratulate Chief Blanton for his department's performance and for the hard work of all the department members," said Commissioner Goodwin. "The citizens in the Town of Rutherfordton should rest easy knowing they have a fine group of firefighters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency."

Fire Chief Tommy Blanton said ""We are elated to learn that our ISO rating is improving from a 5 to a 4." This exemplifies the hard work and dedication that the firefighters have put forth to provide the best possible services to the Rutherfordton community. Chief Blanton went on to say "I appreciate the support that the Town Council and Town Administration has given to the department in order to help make this achievable. It has truly been a team effort and I am extremely proud of this accomplishment."

"This new rating is indicative of the hard work and professionalism of our Fire Department members, our citizens & businesses should be proud of the work that our Fire Department does each day" said Mayor Jimmy Dancy. Mayor Dancy expanded that "This new rating will save homeowners & businesses in their property insurance and is direct result of the hard work of our Fire Chief & his cadre."

This announcement further exemplifies the efforts of the Town of Rutherfordton to provide a high quality services to its citizens. This quality was displayed earlier this year as the Town of Rutherfordton was recognized as one of the safest cities in North Carolina. "This new rating is a testament to the progressiveness & professionalism of firefighters that serve this Town each day" said Town Manager Doug Barrick. He went on say "The citizens are the real winners here, as they receive both high quality fire protection, while enjoying lower property insurance rates."
