Steve Douglas Hughes age 71, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018.

Steve was a member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon and elder. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner with the Rutherfordton Lodge #91. He was a member of the Chase High School class of 1965. His claim to fame was that he was in the Peanut Gallery of the Howdy Doody Show.

Steve was a man of many talents and hobbies. He enjoyed Ham radio, horse back riding and showing his horse Dutchess. He built a dune buggy, a 1923 Bucket T, restored a 1940 Ford and a 1970 Airstream and all were taken on great adventures. He enjoyed fly-fishing, tying flies and even built his own bamboo fly rod. He also built a muzzle loader. He loved flea markets, camping and wood carving, especially by the river. Steve loved all kinds of music and loved to dance. He loved old westerns and Andy Griffith. He was a collector of stuff. He loved nature, sunrises, sunsets, mountains, Charleston, Isle of Palms, necco wafers, carnival peanuts, Three Muskateers and "cheap cookies". He loved to sit outside in his swing, glider or favorite bench. He loved his friends especially the Sunday Lunch Bunch and the Thursday Night Dinner Gang. He loved God, his family and especially his grandchildren. His favorite times were when all the family would be together in the backyard watching the kids hunt Easter eggs or jumping off the diving board saying, "watch Gran". The one thing he did not accomplish in his life that he was 100% convinced he would, was win the lottery.

Left behind with great memories is his high school sweetheart and wife of 51 years Donna Waters Hughes, daughter Kimberly Hughes Todd, son-in-law Tim, son Steven Hughes, five grandchildren.

A celebration of his life was held at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church. Rev Dr. Don Scofield officiated. Interment, with Masonic Rites, was private at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, Forest City. In lieu of flowers please make donations to "Our Future" Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church; PO Box 1133; Rutherfordton NC 28139.
