The Spin on Football and NASCAR

Just 15 days and high school football will begin its first games of the season. Practice just began this past week. I'm far from done with mentioning this topic, but the next two weeks, I will lay out more of what to expect from Rutherford County teams and maybe even Chesnee too.

Although, the NFL has yet to really conclude deflate gate, at least they made one right decision. They are going to let Junior Seau's daughter give the induction speech that he never gets the chance to make. Seau, who took his own life after multiple concussions in the league was voted into the NFL Hall of Fame recently. While he will be inducted this Saturday, the NFL had said that family couldn't make the induction speech for a selected player. I bet this could be one of the greatest moments the Hall has ever seen. Let's hope so.

This past Saturday, I was very saddened and happy at the same time. I have had the honor to meet Joe Gibbs in person. Gibbs, has been inspirational, but he is also very competitive in the NASCAR Series. Just to show how humble Gibbs really is...he allows Kenny Wallace to race his final NASCAR race in the Xfinity Series in one of his top notch cars. Kudos to Joe Gibbs!

Kenny Wallace participated in 905 NASCAR starts in all three series (Cup, Xfinity, Truck) in his racing career, but won just nine times (all of those wins in the Xfinity Series). His personality won many people throughout the years and it sucks that he never won a Cup race. He came close at Rockingham once as he drove for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2001 and finished second. Wallace was in the top ten, but finished 15th in Iowa after two late spins as the 51-year old hung up his helmet in NASCAR for good.

Fact: Wallace also appeared in Forest City at Henson Timber during the 90's as the driver of #36 Cox Lumber Pontiac.

On the Cup side, we almost saw Kyle Busch win again Sunday. The gas tank ran dry on the final lap as he finished 21st. Busch would have been the 11th member to win four races in a row. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are the only two current drivers who have joined that exclusive club in NASCAR.

This weekend, the series heads to Watkins Glen. The good news is that the racing over the past few years has been interesting there. Gordon, Johnson, Kyle Busch and Keselowski should all be good. I still think A.J. Allmendinger will be strong this weekend as well on the road course.
