This past Monday, November 11th, we took time out to remember. It is a special day every year in which we salute our veteran’s, both past and present.

This day began after World War I, known at the time as “The Great War”. It officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed oh June 28, 1919 in the Palace of Versailles outside of the town in France. But the real story which was to influence November 11th came about because fighting has ceased seven months earlier when an armistice or temporarily cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Hence, November 11, 1918 is regarded as the end of the “war to end all wars”.

In November 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the some of the following words. “To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service...“. The original name was called Armistice Day. However, on June 1, 1954 the word Armistice was removed and changed to Veterans Day so that the day would be all inclusive of our Armed Forces. The original concept for the celebration was a day with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business at 11:00 a.m.

Today, there is a new meaning attached and indicative of our commitment to any and all who have served or continue to serve in our military. Just as “11” became the number since World War I, “6” is the new number our military claims today. The phrase “Got Your 6”  or “I’ve Got Your 6” became into being as a result of military lingo. To further explain, picture yourself looking at a clock. At the top and in the forefront of the circle is 12, directly behind at the bottom is 6. Hence, the phrase “got your six” is a direct reference to backing up the 12 who would be the leader. “I’ve got your 6” is a military term meaning, “I’ve got your back.”

The goal of this new campaign is to bridge the civilian-military divide by creating a new conversation in America, so that veterans and military families are perceived as leaders and civic assets. This new campaign derived from the military term is now sweeping America. It ensures that our military veterans return home to be seen as leaders and assets; creates opportunities for veterans and civilians to join together to reinvigorate our communities; inspires Americans to understand the unique challenges and opportunities our veterans face upon their return; provides tools, platforms and resources that American can use to better understand veteran an military culture; embodies-for all Americans-the values of duty, selfless service and mutual respect upheld by those who have served out country.

Veterans Day is a special day. We salute each and every member of our military, both past and present. We need to make sure we thank them, honor them, and say thankful prayers for them. We respect each one of you and now, may we proudly add, “we’ve got your 6!”
