Football playing twin sisters, Kalyn, left, and Palyn Allen pose in front of the Allen stadium where they got their start playing football two years ago. Each has been named player of the game at their various positions.

Maybe a lot of nine year olds dream of college football scholarships.

Maybe a lot of nine year olds play on travel teams that tour the country.

Maybe a lot of nine year olds can play flawless center and rarely bobble a snap, make good tackles on defense and can drive a block all the way to the parking lot.

Not many are girls.

When Kalyn and Palyn Allen take to the gridiron, they don't just defy overwhelming odds, they are occasional tapped as player of the game.

Kalyn recently flipped a shotgun snap over the quarterback's head, her only missed snap of the year. The coach pulled her out of the game to find out what was wrong. The coach, Noble Foster, within a little while put her back in the game and said. "Okay, you made a mistake. Now, get me my money back."

She made four straight tackles and shut down the other team's hopes of victory.

Okay. Here's a life lesson for us all. Be careful what you tell somebody they can't do. When asked why they play, Palyn didn't hesitate, "Some kid at school told me girls don't play football."

That's all it took. The twins, who play plenty of rec league and travel ball in both basketball and softball, headed for sign ups for football.

And yes there is plenty of name calling and attempts to get in their heads, especially by opposing players, but their own teammates often take up for them.

Quarterback Damarion "Smiley" Morris recently watched Kalyn drive a block several feet from the line of scrimmage. Somebody called it a pancake. Morris added, "With a little bit of syrup on top."

When asked about a future that includes players bigger than them, their mother, Tanya, spoke up. "The linemen are 200 pounds on either side of them now. You can't even see Kalyn when she's at center."

Kalyn is starting center on offense and plays a corner on defense. Palyn is an offensive right guard and defensive linebacker. They also make straight A's in Ms. Elton's class at Harris Elementary.

The two standout athletes get lots of encouragement from their mother and their grandmother, Jackie.

But they have another source. At Bible School the other night they were challenged to memorize Ephesians 3:20 "Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us." They recited it perfectly. Apparently girls can play football.

They also like dogs.
