Union Mills Learning Center Hosts Music at the Mills Bluegrass & Arts Festival May 16 & 17

The Union Mills Learning Center (UMLC) will host its second annual Music at the Mills Bluegrass & Arts Festival on May 16 and 17. The festival is presented by Box Creek Wilderness and features 18 outstanding bluegrass and newgrass bands including headliners Darin & Brooke Aldridge. Fresh off their appearance at Merlefest, the husband and wife duo and North Carolina natives have topped Americana/Roots, Bluegrass and Gospel charts. The couple is set to perform Saturday evening and will conduct bluegrass music workshops during the afternoon on Saturday. UMLC is also pleased to have WNCW’s Technical Director and Music Host, Dennis Jones as the emcee for the Saturday portion of this year’s Music at the Mills Bluegrass & Arts Festival! 

To complement the festival, Box Creek Wilderness will host a hike the morning of Saturday, May 17 at 9:00AM in the Box Creek Wilderness Area, North Carolina’s largest private Registered Natural Heritage Area, which is less than 10 minutes from UMLC. Other acts in this year’s festival lineup include East Tennessee State University’s Roan Mountaineers, Most Wanted Bluegrass, New 5 Cents, J-Creek Cloggers (often seen at Maggie Valley’s Stompin’ Grounds) and many more. The event will also feature cultural exhibits, workshops, arts and crafts, retail vendors, and some of the best barbecue this side of the Appalachian Mountains. 

Limited camp sites are available for Friday night for ticket holders who would like to stay overnight. Gates open at 5:00pm on Friday, May 16 and music will begin at 6:00pm and run through midnight. The gates will reopen on Saturday morning at 8:00 am with performances starting at 9am. Advance tickets can be purchased online for $8 through May 15. After that, tickets will be available at the gate for $10. Admission for children 12 & under is free. For a complete schedule or to purchase tickets, please visit www.unionmillslearningcenter.org. All early ticket holders will receive a free festival poster. All proceeds from this event will go towards the educational programs offered at the Union Mills Learning Center.
