Red or Blue? Who are you for?
The battle for Rutherford County supremacy on the football field takes place at R-S Central this weekend.  East Rutherford, who has won the past three meetings in the rivalry will square off against R-S Central for what maybe the County championship decider.
If R-S Central wins, they are the county champs and if East wins, they will have to beat Chase the following week to collect the title outright. If East won this weekend and Chase the next, it would be a three-way tie which would be decided on the scoring margin.
This past week, R-S Central (4-4, 3-3) easily downed East Burke 35-6 in Icard. For the third straight week, matt Atchley goes over 100 yards (143) and controlled this one from the second quarter one. The Hilltoppers scored on offense, defense and special teams all before the first half came to a close.
East Rutherford (3-6, 3-3) hung tough against Crest, but the Chargers pulled away in the fourth quarter, just like the did against Central in a 35-14 outcome. As for East, they have won the county title two of the last three years and are the defending champs as well.
The keys for the game are pretty simple. Who can run the ball better/be more physical? Who can make the least amount of turnovers? Who can finish?
Both teams have had their issues in finishing, but Central is probably more confident at the moment. Playoff implications are also on the line. Depending on who comes out on top between Chase, East, Draughn and R-S, that will determine who nabs a playoff spot and better seeding. Three of the four could actually make it from this group.
As for Chase, they outlasted Kings Mountain 40-28 on the road. The likelihood of the Trojans finding the playoffs is almost certain as they have won their fifth game of the season, but only have two in conference. Chase trailed for most of the Friday, but overtook them in the final frame The Trojans host East Burke this Friday.
Unfortunately, Thomas Jefferson (6-3, 1-2) has lost two in a row and fell on the road again, 40-21 in Bessemer City. Cedric Mackey rushed for over 300 yards and three touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets and that was the biggest difference on Friday night. Efrim Borders scored twice for the Gryphons.
If there is any good news, Thomas Jefferson will be favored in the next two games as they host Pine Lake Prep and Highland Tech in back-to-back contests before the 1A playoffs.
Also, a big congrats to Chase on winning the SMAC conference soccer title. It’s there first ever in school history as they beat Shelby for the second time this season by one goal. Thomas Jefferson earned revenge over Community School of Davidson and a share of the Southern Piedmont Conference title for 2013 for their first ever conference title. And I was wrong about one thing, Thomas Jefferson did make the volleyball playoffs last week as a wildcard, but they were upended in three straight close sets by Avery.
In Martinsville, Jeff Gordon had been shut out of victory lane at the Virginia short track 15 straight times until this past Sunday. It was Gordon, who stalked Matt Kenseth, finally got by him late and surprisingly the yellow hanky never came back out after lap 420. For Gordon it’s his eighth victory at the tough circuit and 88th career win, moving him to third in the standings.
It was more of a shock that Jimmie Johnson had to hang in for fifth place and Kenseth finished ahead of Johnson on Sunday. Following that outcome, I really think Kenseth might just win his second Cup Championship.
On a side note, I am going to miss Juan Montoya from the Cup Series next year. Montoya makes Martinsville races more intriguing for sure. While the car was fairly fast all day, he definitely kept making enemies by running into other cars.
Overall, a great race on Sunday, especially better than in April. A ton of chain reaction stuff, which is a byproduct of short track racing and that pushed for 17 caution flags.
The Truck race was just as good on Saturday, Darrell Wallace Jr. wins his first Truck race and Kevin Harvick became irate for an incident caused by himself. If Harvick is not in Cup title hunt, Childress likely fires Harvick on the spot for talking bad about the Dillon’s.
