Week two of HS football is in the books

Another Friday of High School football has gone by in 2015 and once again, Rutherford County went 3-1 on the week. They are now 6-2 to start the season. While the early season is nice, Week three gets a little tougher.

As expected, Chase (1-1) won easily 47-6 over Cherryville last week. Zeke Brendle was fantastic defensively with two batted passes, two sacks, an interception and even scored a touchdown in the win. The Chase offense also awoke in grounding over 400 yards rushing in the victory.

Tyreece McSwain (two touchdowns) and Bruce Squires (111 yards rushing) also played well. Chase has definitely improved from last season, but it's hard to tell how much at this point. I like what I saw out of this group in Cherryville.

The Trojans finish off their three game road trip to start the season at Bessemer City (1-1) this coming Friday (9/4/15).

Bessemer City's Kevin Goodwin (junior) has averaged 149 yards rushing and two touchdowns per contest so far. Senior, Luke Gibby leads the Yellow Jackets line backing core and is a solid punter too.

Keys: The Yellow Jackets don't pass much, so Chase must win at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. Win the turnover battle. Both teams have seen early season troubles in the fumbling department. Limit the number of penalties.

Over at "The Palace", R-S Central (2-0) had to storm back for the second time this season and grabbed a 28-21 victory over an upstart Stuart Cramer (1-1) last Friday.

Tyrese Tate scored three of the Hilltoppers four touchdowns as the Hilltoppers scored twice in the final period and held on. Spencer Norris and Ramon Rodriguez have played well through two games defensively and the need to keep that play up will be no different this coming weekend.

The schedule doesn't get easier as they visit Polk County (1-1) this Friday. Polk's Jamaal Wheeler scored two touchdowns last week, but took a stunning loss to North Henderson.

Keys: Keep Jamaal Wheeler contained. Central must not have a slow start.

Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson (2-0) cruises to another win as they beat Hickory Grove 49-18. Nick Mintz was responsible for four touchdowns (three running/one passing).

Undoubtedly, the Gryphons will host their biggest game of the season so far when Mountain Island Charter comes to town on Friday Night.

Mountain Island Charter (0-2) had eight turnovers last week in the 28-7 loss to Bessemer City. Still, the Raptors will be the most athletic team Thomas Jefferson has faced so far this season, maybe even all season long. This is also the first Western Piedmont 1A Conference game for Thomas Jefferson.

Aapri Washington is their best player should he play this Friday. He has been heavily recruited at the quarterback spot nationally, but not much was heard out of him in last week's loss.

Keys: Thomas Jefferson must win the turnover battle and control time of possession.

On the other hand, East Rutherford came home with a very disappointing loss last Friday. They were stunned by North Gaston 15-13 on a last minute field goal. Jarvis Hutchins was the bright spot, scoring two touchdowns on the night.

The Cavaliers gained nearly 100 yards more offensively and held North Gaston to just 211 yards total offense. East also won the turnover battle and attained more first downs, but had twice as many penalties as North Gaston. East Rutherford (1-1) will host Roberson (1-1) this Friday. Dezmond Moorman is their best rusher.

Keys: Roberson likes to toss it around a lot, so be disciplined in the secondary. Long offensive drives are great, but East must put more points on the board.
