Gluten Free: New this year is Trios, a gluten-free cookie produced in a gluten-free facility. Trios cost $5 a box; other varieties cost $4 per box.

Anna Grace Winn has been in Girl Scouts for two years, and in that time she’s earned a badge of honor as the top salesperson for Girl Scout Cookies in Rutherford County in 2014.

Anna Grace is following the footsteps of her mother, Julie Winn, who was also a Girl Scout and is now one of the leaders of Anna Grace’s Troop.

At first Anna Grace was nervous to ask people to buy cookies or phone them to see if they’d like to order. Now, her mom says, she’s a pro.

“She has it down pat. She’ll call and say ‘How many boxes do you want this year?’” Julie said.

Two flavors always seem to sell the best for Anna Grace - Peanut Butter Patties and Caramel deLites. Those flavors are joined this year by other long-favorites, as well as a new gluten-free option, Trios.

Trios are produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility, and made of real chocolate chips and peanut butter, real butter and certified gluten-free, whole grain oats. The cookies also do not have palm or hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup. Trios cost $5 per box; all other cookie varieties cost $4 per box.

Also new this year is online ordering, said Lisa Crawford, vice president of Marketing & Communications for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.

“In true Girl Scout fashion, Digital Cookie is girl-led, which means the girls initiate the sale,” Crawford said. Customers will be able to buy Girl Scout Cookies online by invitation of a Girl Scout. Once the customer has a direct link to the page, as provided by the girl, the customer can order from the comfort of home.

COCODirect, the digital sale platform, is not available via search engine, Crawford said. Consumers who are looking for cookies can download the Girl Scout Cookie Finder App at www.girlscoutcookies.org to search for booth sales in their area, and if they do not know a Girl Scout, can contact the council office at 828-328-2444 to be put in touch with one.

“Digital Cookie offers a girl-led, immersive online experience that teaches girls about money management and using dashboards to track their sales and goals. Overall, the new platform teaches modern skills while aligning with the interests of today’s girls,” Crawford said.

Anna Grace said selling cookies has helped her learn organizational skills. It’s also allowed her opportunities to travel.

“Our troop went to New York City, and Anna Grace’s cookie money paid for it,” Julie said.

So what does it take to be the top seller, besides organization?

“We always have cookies with us in the car,” Anna Grace said. “And we ask everyone if they’d like to buy some.”

Cookie booths will be in the community through March 1.
