The Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (TJCA) Middle School Science Olympiad team competed on Saturday, March 10 in Hickory at the Science Olympiad Regional Competition. There were building events, lab events, and testing of academic facts, such as Crime Busters, Battery Buggy, Hovercraft, Meteorology, Potions and Poisons, and Towers, just to name a few. Students had been preparing since September for the competitions, with help from coaches, parents, and the community. Ten area middle schools were represented in the competition with 23 events.

TJCA students came away with 12 first place medals, 2 second place medals, 3 third place medals, and 3 fourth place medals. All members of the team received medals in at least one of their events. Several students competed in four different events. The strong finish by students secured TJCA a first place overall win in the Middle School category, with a combined score that distanced them well ahead of the competitors. The team will compete at the State Science Olympiad competition at NC State University in Raleigh in April.
