Some believe in moral victories and others feel differently.

Chase has to be okay with how they played last Friday as they fell 28-14 to the South Mountain Athletic Conference co-leaders in Burns.

The undefeated season is no more for Chase, but the blemish is to a 3A opponent that they will not see again this season. They still could tie for the conference title if they win out with Burns and East Rutherford suffering losses.

And furthermore, Chase earned a ton of respect and turned some heads this past week in how they played.

Chase held Burns to less than 70 yards of offense as the Bulldogs led 7-0 at half. Tajae McMullens scored twice in the second half for the Trojans, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Chase (6-1, 2-1) will host Shelby (3-4, 1-1) this Friday. The Trojans have never beaten the Golden Lions in football, but they have come close on a number of occasions.

Shelby has longtime Shelby staffer, Lance Ware as the new head coach this season. Shelby has been shaky all season long in a number of areas, but mainly in trying to figure out how to implement the spread offense. No matter what, the Lions are still athletic and running back Kipton Key is the kid Chase must pay close attention too.

For Chase, they have to get over last week and do what they do best, hold solid on defense and play smash mouth football on offense.

Over at East Rutherford (5-2, 2-0), they lost 35-14 to non-conference opponent, Providence Day on homecoming night. The Cavaliers got a touchdown pass from Maddox Stamey to T.J. Watkins and Stamey ran for the other score in the loss. The two teams were tied at the half, but the visiting Chargers scored 21 unanswered points after the break.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier this week as they travel to nearby Burns (6-1, 2-0) as they try to wrestle the SMAC’s top spot away in week eight.

Rahkim Franklin should be the key for East. He had 11 tackles, four assists and a sack on defense this past week. Keeping the Burns offense off the field will present a better chance of success.

As for R-S Central, they were handed a 56-0 loss to Freedom. The Patriots, who had seven turnovers two weeks beforehand against Shelby in a 35-21 win, proved that they were for real this past Friday.

Freedom, who is ranked in the top ten among the 3A state polls were the bigger, stronger, faster group on the field as coach Hilltoppers head coach Mike Cheek honestly stated the facts.

R-S Central (1-6, 0-3) will get a chance to redeem themselves as they visit winless Patton (0-7, 0-3) on Friday. The Hilltoppers own the all-time series 2-0 over the Panthers.

Last year, Thomas Jefferson got it’s first win on the field against Madison, but lost the rematch 49-30 last Friday. TJCA scored all four touchdowns on receptions with two of them by Travis Waldroup-Rodriguez. The Gryphons will host conference foe, Mountain Heritage this coming Friday.

Although, Thomas Jefferson is still making a strong case on the soccer field. They started out 9-0, but have lost the last two matches. Hendersonville, back-to-back state title winner in 1A soccer, defeated TJCA 2-0 to end the unbeaten streak. Owen was just as the Gryphons fell 3-1 in back-to-back games. Owen is ranked 13th in 2A soccer and Thomas Jefferson backslid just a little from fourth to seventh in the 1A ranks.

On the topic of NASCAR for a second, Tony Stewart may have won the first two Chase races, but Jimmie Johnson is still the guy to beat as he goes for his sixth straight title.

And for those who want to help a hometown resident in a difficult time, Randy Whitener, who suffered a recent stroke and needs help with medical bills will have a benefit supper and silent auction this Saturday, October 8 at R-S Central High School. Bids on items will be taken at 2pm-7pm. Upset bids from 7pm to 7:05 pm. The spaghetti dinner is $10 for an adult and $5 for kids 12 and under. Advance adult tickets are available for $8 by contacting Donna Cobb.
